Matt, you have some very exciting motorsports coverage there. I bet going to all those races was a blast.

120,000 kms and cylinder 1 and 5 coil packs are failing, replacing all coil packs and plugs this weekend.

Next up would be oil filter housing gasket and walnut blasting.

checking in @ 76k miles

HPFP at 25k (previous owner)
spark plugs at 50k (previous owner)
regular oil changes

turbo rattle at 75k miles. Had both replaced with brand new revised units @ 76k miles (under extended warrenty)
I am really excited I got the turbo's replaced with a stronger unit. I'll probably keep this car until 150k miles now.
Did a coolant flush at same time
smoked tested / no vacuum leaks

going to do oil, tranny fluid and filter, diff oil, and intake cleaning soon.

From there I want to do coils as PM and fuel filter.

From there I might get the cobb stage 2 with borla exhaust with refreshed suspension.

2009 with 70k miles 100% stock
Rear main leaked, had it replaced under CPO
Valve cover leadked, had it replaced under CPO
Injector recall
Fuel pump recall

I think i hear something from the turbo but i'm not sure...took it to BMW and they didn't hear anything.....but i really don't drive on the pipe much with this car since my drive to work is all surface roads at 40mph so the turbos have not really been spun up much for most of their lives.

This morning when i turned on the car noticed that the screen on the Idrive is developing a white line across the bottom...i guess well it's having some issues...and i doubt its coverd under CPO

Alo my corner lights are giving odd signals back to the CPU. Every now and then they give me a light failure but then i restart the car it goes away.

Do i like this car...sure....will i ever love it? Sigh...I want to love this car...i really really do want to love this 135.....but i don't trust it. I don't know why....

@Kontra Would like to hear more about your car's failures, if you don't mind. Yours is the first N51-N52 variant that shows significant repair issues. Mind sharing more info like:

Are you the original owner?
If not, what mileage on the car when you bought it? Any previous service history.
What's your maintenance schedule?
What's your driving style?
Is this a DD? If so, how many miles per day in what kind of traffic?

Thanks

Just passed 111,111 the other day. Had the water pump failure at about 105k, but that's not a surprise.

That's because that water pump is going to bite you in the ass before too long if you haven't already replaced it.

I'm planning on moving across the country in roughly a year and I'm planning on selling mine then because I don't trust it to drive that far. Not that I've had any major issues, I just don't trust BMW's that much.

You people that don't "trust" your cars are just plain silly. Ive done 5 1500 mile road trips in my 135 in the past year alone. Ohh yeah, my car has 110k miles on it right now.

Its not an old Jag, it won't suddenly stop working because a light breeze hits it.

I'm not the original owner, bought the car with 22k on the clock. It was clearly taken care of by the older Florida resident that owned it, as records also prove.

In terms of maintenance I have had everything as scheduled from the dealer done under warranty, other than halving the oil change intervals on my own. I'm currently on the verge of refreshing trans/diff/coolant fluids etc.

The car is a DD, I bought the car on Valentines Day, '13. 22k-76k in that span.

Driving style is more aggressive, as dictated by the NYC commute the car sees daily on my way to/from work. I have recently switched over to a night shift however, and do not see the typical rush hour traffic like I used to.

In regards to the failures I ran into, I believe they are directly related to an intake I installed. It triggered the check engine light, engine power malfunction, to which I replaced the intake with the Injen 128 CAI, and then brought my car to the dealer (as I knew the previous option wouldn't clear their tests). No other mods have been done to the car other than this intake and the Golf-T mod.

Other than this hiccup, most likely due to my own error, I have total faith in my car handling the beating I give it.

But it will suddenly stop working when that HPFP gives out, or the water pump takes a shit, or hell even if I get a flat I'm kind of screwed because these cars don't have a spare.

It's not like these are uncommon things to happen in these cars.

This car works for me because I have a 7 or 8 minute commute to work, but I would definitely have a more reliable car if I had any actual distance to cover regularly.

While there are known weaknesses in BMWs, if you look at the odds of it happening within any give 1-2K miles it will still be quite a low probability. My daughters drive old cars from their parents. The older ones Jeep Cherokee has about 180K miles and the younger one's Corolla has 240K miles. I got the family AAA coverage and my wife is trying to put a little money away for the replacements but the girls still drive these vehicles whenever they need to. I believe the odds of either of my step daughters cars breaking down is far greater than the worst BMW but we still sleep OK.

170300 km (106000 mi).

Valve cover gasket is showing signs of replacement needed.
VANOS "stuck" code thrown a few times. I have since removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. No more light for the last 20000 km.

N52 FTW.

That's all so far. I believe I'm on original water pump but am unsure since I bought the car at 108000 km.

Actually, as long as those cars are up to date on their maintenance, I wouldn't be nearly as scared of them on a long trip. They don't tend to have parts that will fail out of nowhere.

You put far more faith in BMW's than I do. Is this your first? They make reliable motors/transmissions/diffs and that's about it. And when I say motors, I mean the motor itself, not accessories attached to it.

Put it this way, if you're on a long trip and something goes wrong and you don't have the tools with you to work on it yourself, you're kind of screwed. There aren't a ton of shops that have the available parts (or knowledge) to work on them. So even a relatively minor failure, like a water pump, becomes a pretty big deal in both the cost and the amount of time it takes to have someone fix it.
