Unless you spend your time hammering you engine, you'll never each any extreme oil temperature, and the service life of a synthetic oil is easily 10->15K miles or a year. Some mfgs now have 2 year intervals. |

I'm more interested in UOA reports over opinions or whatever BMW might think. Real world results trump all.
I'm closing on my second oil change and will be sending a sample to Blackstone for analysis to learn what's really up with my engine, and to begin defining what is a good OCI for my engine and oil choice (Castrol 0-40 LL01)

Book says 15k, my guess is he bounced off a jersey barrier or guardrail at 14k on the oil.
The fact is the oil was changed within manufacturers spec, and from the dealer so BMW approved oil was used. I would drive it till the wheels fall off. My dad had a 86 Chevy Astro, I had a 85 RX-7, my buddy who grew up across the street from me had a 84 300-ZX and his dad had a 84 944. He and I changed the oil religiously at significantly less than the manufacturers recommendation, his dad changed it around when the book said to. On the other hand, my dad washed the van once a year whether it needed it or not, kept it parked outside often overnight with the windows open, and the fellow we sold it to sold it again, and about two owners later bought it back. The motor was never opened up at over 300K. I know, current BMWs are not as well made as an 80s Chevy, so what I wrote is meaningless.

They'll send you a really nice sample collection kit free. Includes a container to ship in w/label, a sample bottle, absorbent pad and ziplock baggie. Even includes a letter with details about how/why it's safe & legal to ship.
They tend to give really detailed analysis & commentary, and will build on the notes from sample to sample with comments on how things have changed since last sample etc. They'd love a chance to toss a forensic analysis at it I'm sure, as well as keeping up with you/the engine through it's future life. They really seem to like what they do. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php

Should get the car back today!
I am out of line thinking I shouldn't be charged for the OFGH replacement that lead to this failure??? Dealer seems to think this is reasonable. What say you?

I don't think you should have to pay for that, no. They fucked the job up causing a total engine loss, this whole thing shouldn't cost you a penny...

Depends on what else they are doing for free. Did they charge you for the water pump & t-stat? New OFHG for new motor or is it the old one or the old new one? What about the valve cover gasket? New oil? Other fluids?

Taking my chance on pan gasket. New motor has OFHG done about 10K ago. New motor got new Valve cover gasket their cost New oil/ filter their cost New Coolant their cost (I had paid for a coolant flush the day of the catastrophe...I am going to ask for that back too.) New clutch (I am paying for that...but they want to charge me labor. To which I am going to point out the labor to unbolt and swap is more than the labor to open the box and install new. I am buying the core back for $300 so I can keep injectors, coils, HPFP etc as spares. The coolant flush and OFHG is about $925, the clutch is about $750. I have a tow bill for $65.00. The way I see it is I owe them about $60 -825 ofhg - 100 coolant - 65 tow bill + 750 clutch+ 300 core= $60 In actuality I shouldn't pay 300 for the core as they are no longer incurring shipping charges to send motor back to Florida. The engine swap devalues the car to any dealer so I wont ever get that back. I just want to be made whole. They have been great so far. Wish me luck.

After reading this thread, I'm not going to take so lightly work that exposes the internals, I did a diy ofhg a few weeks ago and everything went well, but it wasn't in my mind like it should be that it would be silly easy to ruin the engine.

I wanted to do the OFHG myself as well in the near future if the new oil change BMW did doesn't leak slowly like the last time (had to put 1qt in after 13,000km which is a very slow leak). So that had me thinking either they over tightened the filter or the OFGH is leaking slowly. Time will tell but is about $900 CND in labour for $30 in gaskets. I could do it myself with help from pops of course since he has ever tool known to man pretty much.
If my dealer did that, I would have asked them to get me into a car on the lot at no cost with the same payments I'm already making. They done fucked it up. They done fix it up too. Not sure if you could involve a lawyer with this issue, but why pay for a repair that wasn't repaired? OFGH should cost $0 You should only pay maybe 30 mins labour for the clutch since it's right there and open regardless. Whole situation makes me shake my head. |

Picking up this afternoon!!! Finally.
****update***** Got the car. Runs great, everything feels right. So we still have some issues regarding price. All of a sudden they are saying the order the 1 yr warranty for me and wants to pass the $1500 fee for the one year parts only. Whoa...not part of the deal. They also trying to charge me labor for installing a NEW clutch. Wait. Wouldn't there be more labor in pulling the OLD clutch and reinstalling on the new car? With a new clutch you just open the box and install the clutch? Also still trying to charge me for OFHG even though THEY didn't replace the one in the car. That is not going to fly. I am picking up the old motor and will be tearing it down...wonder what I will find?

Resolution to this stressful event is at hand.
The Dealer stepped up and took care of it. Refunded the original cost of repairs and applied to clutch and core charge...a wash there. Picked up the year warranty too. I drove the car about 60 miles last night and it is so good to be back in my 135i!!!!
