That wasn't the discussion/statement, though. They refuse to install OEM parts people bring in-- they're turn away the work rather than deal with the potential issues.

which still works with what i'm saying.. have the blanket rule so you can do the above.

I've personally not been to a shop that demands OEM only, and i doubt i'd want to. A decent shop should be able to tell the difference between poor quality and good quality parts.

This is why you DIY! The front control arms are not really difficult. An impact gun is probably a good idea, though.

But you need to get the alignment *immediately* and that is not something that's a good DIY project. I wouldn't try to align my own car despite my strong DIY tendencies. There are some good techniques but they still require at least some equipment and involve hours and hours of work to workaround not having a proper alignment rack. I would suggest finding an alignment shop that caters to weekend racers and won't balk at you asking or having a lot of negative camber in front. Hit up your local SCCA chapter for referrals. You might even find the shop can suggest good numbers for more *ahem* "aggressive" driving habits.

For toe, there are some techniques that work decently well for the DIYer. A simple trammel bar can get the toe right, though the front wheels may not be square to the chassis. Stringing the car can fix that, if it's done correctly (you must measure from the proper places).

On an otherwise stock BMW camber is not adjustable.

When I was racing wheel to wheel, I did those. Once you've got it down, it's not time consuming at all. These days I go to a shop. The difference is the frequency of adjustment, and the ease of getting the car to the alignment shop (the police frown on driving a Formula Ford on the street).

So I'm thinking of picking up a set of these. What are your opinions on installing just the front M3 bits, vs installing the front m3 bits plus dinan fixed camber plates?

My ideal ending placed would be to get a square tire setup with as neutral understeer/oversteer balance as i can get. For now I would still be running 261M with 225 fronts, that's a constant. I also currently have the Bilstein B12 pro kit so the fixed dinan camber plates would be two fold for me, add some extra camber + raise the front ride height a little as I am one of those people that think this setup has a little too much rake.

Should I just get the arms and will that be enough added camber to make me feel satisfied for a while before I add camber plates and eventually wheels and tires for a more complete square setup?

Thoughts?

no and there most likely won't be just because they are 'TRW'. They're the same thing, except they can't sell them with the M logo so they grind it off

Where are the old "horror stories" you're implying exist?

I cant comment on what amount of camber is good for you, but I can tell you the results of a similar setup from a numerical standpoint. I have swift spec r/bilsteins, trw fronts, and dinan camber plates. The minimum amount of camber I can dial in with this setup is 2.2 degrees. so if you want less than that, one of them would need to be taken out of the equation.

I think with the trw bits only, camber is around 1.7 degrees. as it turns out, I needed both with my 235/40 fronts on apex arc 8 8.5 inch 45 offset to avoid smashing my fender. with the arms only I still rubbed, regardless of fender roll. with the plates set at the minimum camber, the fronts no longer rub.

Dinan camber plates raise front height?

I have the B12 kit installed and was not aware that the Dinan camber plates raised the front height. Do you have any more info?

Thanks,

John

The dinan plates go between the car and the stock strut top mount. They are about a quarter inch thick, and raise the front about that much as well.

Has anyone upgraded the rear trailing arm set ($225) by ECS? They have a TRW front/rear control arm + trailing arm kit listed on the site.
http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E82-128...Arm/ES2794964/

How much does changing the rear trailing arm improve suspension/handling?
