Wink 128i > 300HP N52 1M conversion

So ive been searching this forum and learning how to use it ever since I got my 2010 128i 6mt as a daily while really turnin and burnin on one of my E30,s and one day I just stopped driving the E30,s ive been daily driving for the past decade for some reason..

Ive owned quit a bit of BMW's but I think, that is one is the one...

I really wanted a 135i at first thought of even getting something newer to daily. Come the following weeks I was test driving cars all around my area and nothing felt right, until my good friend and room mate at the time suggested I go look at a 128i. I thought to myself, no way I'm giving in and buying another slow car! But per usual he was onto something...

fast forward through haggling and more searching, I found "the one" at a dealership my friend was employed at.

A Alpine White 2010 128i 6mt slicktop base model with sport package, nothing fancy, just the way I like it

I'm skipping about 7 months of ownership and parts but ill give you a brief rundown of what ive done and where I want the car to be!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aftermarket parts:
Bilstein PSS9 coilovers
BMW performance F30 BBK (on the way)
ECS billet oil filter housing cap
AA catless header
Resonator deleted
135i muffler
UUC SS clutch line
UUC Race trans mounts
CDV delete

Interior:
BMW Performance shift boot
BMW Performance hand brake boot
BMW Performance steering wheel trim
ZHP shift knob
BMS clutch stop
E30 Genuine european black floor mats

Exterior:
135i front bumper (horrible paint match)
135i LCI xenon headlights (blacked out housings)
New windshield just replaced

Wheels:
BMW Style 124 (custom offsets)
18x8 - 215/45r18
18x9 - 245/40r18

Currently the car is undergoing some added horsepower, by adding an N54 intake manifold (no DISA) along with a custom BPC intake and BPC Alpha-N tune hopefully bumping this car up to 270whp. As well as retrofitting E9x M3 cluster and the bi-xenon headlights.

THE PLAN:
My plan for this car is simple. absolutely kill in the mountains (blue ridge parkway) and still be a great daily driver. Although I am modding this car above and beyond, I still have comfort in mind and drivability.

The plan is to have this car 1M converted with 300+bhp N52 with a 3.73 final gear, mental handling, and enough comfort for a mostly daily driven vehicle.

PICTRUES TO COME

OP - sounds like a great build. Very interested in hearing about your power adders as there haven't been many people that went the full route with N54 intake manifold, matching tune, headers, etc.

One question - how do you find the sound with the AA headers and resonators removed and a 135i muffler?

Thanks for the welcome fellas! Extremely busy as work but tonight I’ll get a few photos up here!

The sound is similar to E46 M3 with supersprint setup. It’s quit loud at WOT and a little bit of drone. I may add a resonator and replace the 135i muffler with something higher flowing but we’ll see after the intake and tune.

So the plan is to go 1M body front and rear in the very near future. So I'm going to wait to change the wheels until I go 1M.

I'm taking this time to tune the car for power and setup the suspension, then once I get to a comfortable point between those two aspects I will do the body conversion and focus on weight savings where I can.

I just finished a bunch of stuff so I will make an update post now below!

Update: 12/27/17

This past month has been fun and stressful. I installed e9x M3 control arms all around and had the same shop do the alignment twice, both times butchering it and charging me $100. No more with them, going to BPC for my alignments.

So along with e9x M3 control arms, I also went ahead and got the car tuned with the N54 intake manifold and throttle body! I went to BPC for the tune and they killed it. This Friday we are converting to E85 for a little more power.

Install was a breeze on the manifold, I had to cap one vacuum line from the back of the valve cover and the other one with the sensor I had to punch out the hole on the back of the N54 for it. Everything else was very straight forward plugging things in.

However, there is not a bracket for the loom on this manifold like the N52 manifold. Also there are no sensor brackets for the ambient air sensors. I will come up with something else for those two items this weekend.

TUNE:
So we made 248rwhp and 207rwtq on a Dynojet 224X

This dyno is as follows:
Stock 128i 6MT - 201whp 185tq
My car with all upgrades minus tune - 235whp 200wtq
My car with all upgrade plus tune - 248whp and 207wtq

This dyno is as follows:
N52 with 3 stage manifold and same headers with tune - 224whp 217wtq
My car with tune and N54 manifold and headers - 248whp 207wtq

So its a trade-off to go up 24whp and loose 10wtq, that's a win in my book and driveability is much better than stock. can deffinately feel even the small increase in tq, as well as much better throttle response and a linear power band until you hit about 5k then it hits pretty good!

Onto the rest of the stuff here is the plan for the weekend:

SS brake lines
SS clutch line
Brake fluid flush
Alignment
Oil change
E85 tune at BPC
034 Motor mounts

And finally detail the interior.

Very excited to be putting more money into this car, its going to be great.

As for the handling aspect I'm in the process of gathering parts for the 1M conversion and it will be as functional as possible.

PICTURES!!!!!!

Great build! It's really coming together and wow those numbers are impressive from just the manifold.

I bet this would make desertman123 happy to see that someone dynoed results for his next project.

LMAO
You really are my #1 fan

Don't tempt me with that E85 tune....

And it's interesting to see exactly the differences between the 3IM and N54 mani. N54 set up for high velocity gas (boost lol) gives a ton of top end power, but the 3IM gives more torque, especially at the low end.

Just got in contact with Marty and read the thread about what it is. Very interesting, can’t wait to order and get them installed.

The new planks S65 injectors, MILVs, and E85! Maybe 300whp?

No coding on the brake kit, just extensive bleeding lol.
Currently I still have a SES light on after the tune so hopefully I can figure that out soon.

BPC said its just a numbers thing with how the computer reads lean and rich and its a fine line where it throws a SES so that should be the issue, but will dig further to find out.

Thanks for the love everyone! Long way to go.
