Custom made vents ? ? ?

As all N54 owners on here know this engine runs quite hot (well mine does anyway)

& I was wondering if anyone has though of venting their bonet?

Than that way if you can position the vents in the correct place the induction kits may make more sense ? ? As you are directing the air straight to it?

It would be cool If you could get a hold of say for example the M3 (e92) vents and have them moulded on to the 135 bonet ? ?

Any opinions?

Do we?

I've never noticed a particular heat issue - I've never had a warning pop up on the iDrive (happened once on my 535D when the moving grille vents got stuck closed) or seen the oil temps rise above 120.

What sort of heat issues are you and others seeing? How much power are you running?

Ever put your hand on the right (pass) side of the hood? That sucker is damm hot. As for as engine oil temps... my car runs always just under 250' F.

As above... No probs running the power or temp issues BUT these engines do run quite hot...

And as most, if not all induction kits for the 135 are based right in the centre of the engine where the heat is I was thinking of creating a way of getting cooler air to the fillters..

None of that boy racer Scooby or Pulsar type vents but some thing nice like Jags XKR or M3 vents ? ? ?

To me "running hot" means "running outside of specificaiton", which I'm sure they don't.

As for intakes, I've not seen ANY evidence for any of the under-bonnet air intakes providing a power increase. Long chat with Imran about it in fact. Now, routing air from outside the vehicle I can see the benefit of, but I think you're trying to solve a problem you're making for yourself - without any benefit I can see I've spent the last 10 years modding cars and one thing I've learnt the hard and expensive way is if it isn't 100% proven, don't do it, unless you like burning money.

...In fact, I see you say so as much yourself in another post! So you know there aren't good gains from an underbonnet open air intake, yet you want to know how to get hot air out of the engine bay. I'm confused?

Heres a couple of tests both Burger Tuning (Manufacturer) and Forum member Mr 5 (Independant) on the DCI vs stock vs Mr 5 CAI

As Clived said you'd be better of spending the money on proven mods like the FMIC or Meth, oil cooler etc than going down the vented bonnet route to reduce IAT and Engine temp. Unless its looks your after

Clive I think the OP was getting to the point that right now there is no point in aftermarket induction kits because of the heat generated by the N54, I agree with him that bonnet vents with some sort of scoop to channel the cold air directly into an aftermarket induction kit may see some gains. Without a cold air feed I would never consider an induction kit as the heat soak would be rediculous imo.

The N54 does run hot when compared to other engines or similar power that I have owned in the past but then this is my first Twin Turbo car. It might not be running outside its manufacturer operating temps but 120 degrees is fairly standard from my stock engine and thats about 25 degree's higher than any of my M3's past and present. I assumed this was down to the fact that its a blown engine? Its amusing in traffic when its raining, there is no sound/heat proofing under the bonnet and as a result steam poors off it when sat in traffic in the rain and I get people pointing fingers at it.

I do agree though that there are easier proven gains. I think a remap on mine would be followed by an oil cooler at the very least and possible a larger intercooler too.

Doesn't run any hotter than my previous car - but then that was pumping 450bhp from a 2.7 V6 ;-)
