So I'll be flying home tomorrow am, and I wish I hadn't checked the weather. Forecast for snow. And as you would expect, winter tires not installed yet. Hopefully, the conclusion of this story is boring.

Driving very carefully (20 years+ of snow/ice driving) and the car just spinned around in 100 km/h. Glad to be alive. If I have spikes or Nordic rubber that would not have happened. Almost all central European friction/all year rubber is terrible on ice and snow. Some actually really dangerous (usually Korean brand winter tires). Best in tests over here are Nokian Hakka 7 and Continental ContactIce for spiked winter tires. Then Micheline X-ICE, Nokian Hakka R, Goodyear ultra grip Ice, Continental Contivikin Contact 5 where the best without spikes. The central european/friction/all year type rubber was all very bad in the test. The ones that actually got a "avoid/dangerous" were (from worst first): Toyo Snowprox S953 (terrible got a skull instead of "-"), Vredstein Snowtrac 3, Savo Eskimo HP, Dunlop SP Winter Sport. All of the last ones got a "-" and the best was +++++. This is for regions where you do get both snow and ice. The last 5 was the worst of the friction tires so there are ok ones if you never get snow and ice.
Hybris4u: I understand u very well but Nokian hakkapeliitta 7 or R no have sizes for original wheels. Thats why I try how the tires works under my car. Low air pressure helps of course, little bit. Last winter I had M3 with Nokian WR, which is European modell and I didnt have problem with these tires. Ok, they had 235/35-19 rear and front so the traction was better. I have other car which I can drive when its bad weather

I ordered my tires last week and got it next week, then we need to waiting for snow, maybe the winter coming on same time to Sweden

Japi: yepp no other rubber than european for the original wheels. Either Pirelli or Michelin as far as I have found. Heard something that this winter is supposed to be as bad or worse than last winter. Will start in December they say. Will be cool the see if they are right. I get my car in January. Fully loaded. For bad winter I have an X5 - E70 with Hakka 5 spikes so no problem in the snow or ice for me either. ;-) But will still go for real winters for the 1M as I will need to drive it now and then.

Japi: BTW the 1M must be damn expensive in Finland? I did pay like 52000 Euro for mine with basically everything. Got 8% discount.

Managed to tip toe home without causing any damage. (Had a couple of frightening ments though) This was my first experience with summer only tires, and I was not impressed. The road was covered with packed wet snow, and the temperature was only -2 C. Had fun experimenting with M mode and DSC.

Good to hear you didn't have any major problems. Summer tires under those conditions are essentially hockey pucks, and at that temperature road friction is as bad as it gets, so you're lucky nothing serious happened.

I tried to go to car wash later, but it was so slippery that the back would just spin and eventually would run out of road just because of the crown. My wife was shocked at how useless this car is with the summer rubber. I think she now gets why my winter set up is worth it. We are used to all season and AWD.

When breaking on ice the best spiked rubber and the all winter tires. Its like 40-50% longer breaking distance. With summer tires? Well...

Yes, u right! Its too expensive and taxes go up futher from march 2012, taxes denpending about co emission and over 110 g/km car prices go up. So, its impact for 90% of every selling cars in Finland.
My M1 cost 85000 euros with options, basic car cost 75000. From march 2012 price go up 10000 euro for M1 so that its too expensive. Our governemt is sucks!

This is not good news for peoples how need a car

Finally got my winter wheels installed. I think they look great on this car. Check out how big the brake disks look now!! I used 12 mm spacer on fronts and 15 mm on the rear. My wife even mentioned that they look pretty good, and she normally doesn't notice, or at least comment on such things.

The Dunlop Wintersport 3D's are awesome. I went with 235/40-18 and 255/40-18. The traction during braking is most impressive to me so far. It didn't take much to improvement in setting off to impress me, based on my one day with the summer tires on.

The spacers serve a dual purpose. A)Clear the front calipers and B)Line up the outside of the wheels/tires with the fender. It was important to me to retain the stock, staggered look as well.

At least it is fun to drive, all fishy-taily and stuff, and not downright frightening.

PS-Sorry about iphone photos. It was hard to capture the side view due to light and crappy camera quality.

Colin.

Could you elaborate? Sounds like the torque makes for challenging driving despite the winter setup. Is the back end swinging around all the time, or is it fairly well behaved? Being in Saskatchewan, I suppose you can't comment on how well it does driving up hills.

They are replica (knock off) M6 wheels, painted black. They look very similar to the F10 M5 wheels, ie, sort of a tuning fork shape spoke. I bought them from A-Spec Wheels and Tires via eBay.

You are correct, I cannot comment on hill climb ability. However, I can't see it being a problem unless you add full on blizzard conditions with a steep incline.

By fishy taily, I mean you can get the rear to step out fairly easily around all the intersections. But, I have discovered that you really need to give it a "drink" to get a significant slide started. I tried a 1/2 donut on a wide empty street. I was a little wimpy with the gas, and it started to under steer. My point is that the tires grip surprisingly well.

So far, I much prefer the MDM on the snow. It seems to let the tires spin a fair bit while setting off, but quickly and smoothly corrects any mistakes. However, you will only get about 10-15 degrees of yaw (?) with MDM on.

DSC need to be off for real fun. I'm just not ready to explain to my wife that I hit the tulips because I had the traction control off.

Just to clarify, the rear end is very well behaved with these tires on the wet snow and ice that I've been driving on today. Assuming normal right foot weight.

Thanks for the pictures. What size are the wheels?

Edit: Saw an earlier post of yours. So you ended up going with 18x8 ET 37 w/ 12mm spacer (Front) and 18x9 ET 37 w/ 15mm spacer (Rear)?

Love your OE winter wheels! I also like the way those 20mm rear spacers pushed out the tires.
