I hate to say it, but I have to agree a lot with him. Its fast and I love the car, but I can't categorize it as fun. I think a car has to be fun to not be boring and my 135 just doesn't make it.

anyone who says the 135i is "boring" or "not fun" is either on crack, or probably has the automatic

I agree with the author on several of his points, too, but I think "boring" is an overstatement and a little harsh. The 135i is maybe a little disconnected but is still fun to drive and very quick. You just need to turn the nannies off and push the car a bit to avoid the understeer and enjoy the cars true spirit.

Yeah, but a GT2 is not the easiest car to deal with on a daily basis either. BMW's have always maintained a decent balance between everyday drivability and sportiness. That's why I bought one. 90% of my driving will have to be "boring" if I'm going to have my license a year from now! If you wanted just a sports car, then get an S2000 or a Miata (or a GT2 ;-)

The motor is nice, pulls hard, yadda yadda yadda. But the car is very isolated in feel, over complicated (for a "sports car"), and understeers way too much (stock form). I know alot of this stuff can be corrected with mods, but yep, in stock form...boring. But I refuse to spend the time, money, and void the warranty on a car I just am not excited about. Before you say it, I know the BMW suspension and exhaust, if installed by the dealer would not void the warranty. I do see good reviews of the exhaust, but the suspension does not appear to have the same level of support. Dinan tune is mega-bucks and from reading the relationship may be strained with BMW. No one seems to know the factual answer on that. Maybe it's the cost, but very few people seem to be jumping on the suspension. Most days I don't even drive it anymore, I actually prefer to drive our Xterra. I am trying to keep the miles off the 135 in anticipation of a much sooner than expected trade. Right now I don't know what I would get instead, the Cayman S is @ $20,000 grand more, I will never buy another Mitsu(EVO), and the new STi is just hideous to look at, G37 looks to be even more boring. That new Lotus Evora looks to have "it" but we are back up to Porsche price territory again. It's going to be 79 degrees here today, light wind and partly sunny. I think I feel a tear forming up as I think about my now traded S2000... |

I think the car isn't quite meeting people's expectations if they went in expecting a sports car. A sports coupe isn't meant to have the responses as a true sports car.

It's a matter of perspective - if you think this car is a 'sports car' you'll be disappointed. If you want to jump into a 135i and except to be tearing up the track immediately, like you can in a stock Cayman S, you'll be disappointed.
I owned a sports car and though it was not as fast as the 135i, it certainly was more agile and the handling was more 'available' to a casual user. I've written this numerous times (included the last big review of the 135i I did a week or so ago and is floating around here somewhere). The 135i is a Grand Touring car. A great two place, occasional rear seat passenger, GT. A carver of mountain roads, a conveyance that is both comfortable and capable. Two people and their luggage in a semi-luxurious interior with great seats - chews up the miles and the twisties con brio. But if you think it's a sports car, well you might then think it's boring. |

Well thats fine...
I do not take reviews seriously from automotive press that gets most of their spy material from browsing internet message boards.

You know what these reviews usually have in common is that they start with the author's war stories about BMWs of old and end up complaining that the present just can't live up to their dear, old memories. I find those reviews boring because they're primarily about the author's personal baggage and not the car as it exists in the current marketplace.
