Out of warranty - should I extend?
Well the barge is just about to go out of warranty and BMW have offered an extended warrranty for either 1 or 2 years at $2500 or $3100 respectively. Same conditions as the std one.
Any thoughts? How much is a HPFP fitted!?

Depends how long you want to keep the car. Id go for the extension - even if you're keeping or selling. Keeping you'll have piece of mind, and selling the vehicle under extended warranty will grab you a better price :-) |

My M3 is also out of warranty next month... got a quote to extend for 2 years ~$5500 .
After some discussions with the dealer they reduced that to ~$3500, I still think it is a waste given I don't track/flog the car... much. Think I will just wing it. |

Having said that, I did keep an E46 323i for 7 years without a hiccup but my E53 X5 made a lot of visits back to the dealer after the warranty expired. Similarly, my '08 135i and current E90 M3 had their fair share of trips back to the dealer but all within the warranty period. My E60 530i used to blow fuses and even the A/C packed in. Even the new E70 X5 went back.... the day I picked it up!!! (Auto tailgate would not lock)! I guess it boils down to a question of love. If you really, really love your car and want to keep it, it may be an option you'd consider. As much as I love my M3... I don't think I will keep it beyond the warranty period. Love hurts.............. My 12 year old relationship with BMW will be sorely tested in 2012/13 - unless they bring in the F30 3 series with the twin turbo 3.0L diesel that's in the 335d overseas!! FWIW...the Kizashi is nearly a year old and has not skipped a beat!!

I'm interested to know if known issues like the HPFP will be honoured outside of warranty.

USA honours its HPFP for 10years and 100,000 miles we should do the same.

I think in Oz it really is a case by case thing. If you push hard enough you would probably get it done totally free, I am not sure. I dont really know much about the install for this part though, perhaps someone else can advise on this.

From my experience with the X5 I had bits replaced well after warranty. All I copped was the labour. Fair enough if you have to pay a hundred $$$ for labour to get a thousand $$$ part!

If I were looking at buying a BMW older than 3 years I'd go for one that had the extended warranty as part of the sale. I've extended mine and will use it as a selling feature this year when it makes way for the 1M.

I took out extended for mine as well at $3070 for two years unlimited km's. Already had a set of trims and the seat belt extender replaced under the extended warranty
I took it out for peace of mind since i've always had issues with cars past warranty |

I think it depends on what issues you've had with the car so far. If you've had nothing and your only worried about the HPFP then i'd go without.
Like others have said at the very least the part is covered under warranty and i dare say that if you push hard enough, with the US recall as a precedent then you can probably get labour free also. Worst case scenario you get a replacement, pay the labour (i dare say would be far less than 3000..) then demand at least a 12 month warranty on the new part. On the other hand though, if you've had a heap of problems with the car already then i'd buy it in a heartbeat but it doesn't sound like that's the case. |

Hmmm.....got my eye on the Toyota FJ Cruiser IF they bring it out in a diesel.
Let's see if the little bugger that put me off the road (4 weeks now) fares against that muther if he pulls out in front on his 50cc moped again!
