Think turbo is gone... and now it's upgraded!

Lost power and went to limp mode on the track and now have light blue smoke at startup for a bit then intermittently after that.

Codes:

28A1 - Intake absolute pressure, plausibility: Pressure too low.

2C58 - Charging Pressure control: Switch-off as consequence

2C86 - Charging Pressure - Ambient Pressure, Comparison: Charging Pressure too low.

Shadow codes:

2820 - Absolute Pressure sensor, intake pipe: Multiple fault. (I think this one is a symptom, not a cause)
2C7F - Charing Pressure sensor. Multiple fault. (I think this one is a symptom, not a cause)

Car will not build boost.

So, any other opinions before I go turbo shopping?

Sounds like chargepipe cracked. Have you upgraded yet?

Yes. ER 3 years ago. I am going to check all connections but a cracked chargepipe wouldn't cause blue smoke in the exhaust.

I was just asking more in general what the afr was at. A lot of the Etunes run a little leaner (12.5) which is fine for a few pulls here and there. But for road course I would tune closer to 12.1ish. Something to consider after you replace the turbo if your afr is on the leaner side.

Looks like Wedge tuned it to 12.3ish from this log.

What options are out there right now for E N55 turbos? Pure seems to be the go to right now.

A lot of great options out there. I think it really depends on what power level goals are and what type of use.

In my opinion and personal experience, Pure would be my choice. Their turbos cover a wide range of performance. They have the tried and tested PS1 and PS2, and the soon to be released Pure 800 for the upper end of power.

Thx. You advice is appreciated. I am not going for big power, would just like to get 450-500WHP/450-500WTQ on pump gas (92).

You obviously have a lot of expertise in this regard that I respect (I also perused your install thread). I am going with a PS2 with the GFB DV and the improved wastegate. I am also going to outsource this to a local Indy shop rather than do it myself (my wife's recommendation)...going to go ahead and get a number of other things done. Rod bearings (ironically, since they are OK - see my other thread). Water pump and thermostat. Put baffle in the oil pan.

Probably going to get a stg 2 fuel-it LPFP and a Wagner EVO-III FMIC to complete this round of upgrades. That way I shouldn't run into any ceilings with the new turbo. Only wildcard is HPFP, but I really can't afford to add one of the improved ones yet...VERY pricey.

All this because racecar. LOL.

My N55 seems to smoke at full temp on deceleration and at hot idle, doesn't really do it on accel though. I'm thinking turbo as well

It's worth researching. I want to say turbo would be more acceleration not decel. Decel... draws vacuum (?)... valve guides?

I'm talking out my butt now, this stuff has been too long ago (automated dynos at a place that built turbo'd diesel engines). But what I'm trying to say is to research it, might be something else altogether. Or of course could indeed be turbo related.

I am glad to share any information that would help.

PS2 is a great choice. Is your Hpfp the n54 style or the newer style?

Great recommendation by your wife! I am sure you can do it but it’s going to be very nice having someone else do it and it will probably get done more quickly. When I decided to get the M4 flywheel, I ended up paying a reputable shop to do the install. One of the best decisions I’ve made. It would’ve taken me forever but I got my car back in literally two days.

Yeah I have been following your rod bearing thread. Looking forward to seeing how they look. Crossing my fingers they look great.

Looks like you have a great list of other things to take care of while you’re in there. Do you know what brand baffle you’re going to go with? The only thing I would say you could possibly hold off on is the low pressure fuel pump if you’re willing to see how your current pump does with the additional power. I have seen some that are totally fine.

“ All this because racecar.” I totally get it. Lol.

I'm following because I intend to at some point go Pure stage 2 as well.

Is there a good way to identify N54 HPFP style vs newer style? My car was built in 09/2010 so I'm assuming I have the earlier version? I have replaced it once already back when it had about 80k miles too.

My understanding is that is is the N54 style since I have a 4/11 build date.

Probably VAC...it's what my shop recommends. I know Asbjorn and bbnks2 don't think they work but it can't hurt, I don't think. Plus I have the Accusump too.

Can't hurt. Not a very good motorsport solution though. Baffle is the bare minimum we should've gotten from the factory like most every generation BMW engine before n5x.

dtla1 , AndyW , i believe anything with a production date in 2011 or earlier would have the older style pump (for n55 eseries, if you have the unlocked ecu, then you have the older style pump). When Andy said he was passing on the HPFP upgrade, it made wonder if he had the newer style pump, which has actual upgrade replacements from a couple of vendors. AFAIK, for the older style pump, there are a couple of Over Drive add on options, but no full replacement. Which is why I personally went to PI, i am trying to reduce the load on the HPFP, not increase it. That is my opinion of course.

I know nothing about baffles other than reading the information shared by mostly you guys and on spool, but i came across this via google search. Anyone have any experience with it? https://www.mmrperformance.co.uk/pro...55-sump-baffle
