Beltronics STI-R Plus & Blinder HP-905 Triple install

Just picked up a used 2012 135i DCT a few months ago, this is the first mod I've done...and it's close to paying for itself already!
-Beltronics STI-R Plus (includes GPS): one of the best units, includes GPS (a must IMO). Remote install is great...I've had a few friends with their windshield mount detectors stolen (window smashed & loosing a $500 detector is terrible!). This unit has laser jammers as an option (whereas the equivalent Escort unit automatically includes the jammers and costs more for it), which is the main reason I went with Beltronics...b/c I wanted a better laser jammer.
-Blinder H-905 Triple: supposed to be top of the line...and so far it's worked great. only downside is that the speaker is in the main unit and it's not very loud...I'll re-locate it closer to the driver's seat.

Installed on the lower center console: this piece is fairly easy to remove, it comes out w/ the A/C control unit. I mounted the speaker behind this area...I may drill a few holes to allow more of the sound out (at higher speeds w/ windows down it's still audible, but not as alerting as I'd like)

night shot: easy to read, out of the way.

Front radar receiver: had to cut some of the honeycomb grille, routed wire behind bumper and through passenger side, and then down through the wiring box). used good double sided tape on the whole surface of the unit...no issues holding.

wiring/units: used velcro to attached them on the upper surface of the passenger footwell...it's out of the way and easy to access.

Blinder front units in upper grilles: had to cut some of the grille material. could have mounted them further recessed, but jammers work better when they've got a clear view. Most laser jammers cover a side-to-side range; in order to cover the headlights/license plate (main targets) I had to mount them horizontally.

Blinder rear unit: mounted just below the license plate. body is painted with BMW Alpine White, matches fairly well. only portion that's not white is the face of the unit which sends/receives.

Side shot of rear unit:

Have you gotten the jammers tested to make sure they're covering the car? I've read alot of times its important to go get them tested since they might not be covering a certain area and you would need to adjust them.

Also any reason you didn't go with Laser Interceptors? I've read they seem to be the best on the market, most times jamming all the way to the gun if you don't disable them. I bought a pair but I haven't installed them yet due to my car being a lease and I have to return it in less than a year. Have them sitting in my garage until my next car.

I've read good reviews on both, but the latest review had the blinder slightly ahead...either way I found a local dealer that gave me a discount on a new unit, so I went with blinder. The interceptors do have a BMW version that lets the, be installed vertically in the grill....that would've been nice.

I didn't test them out for coverage...they're as close to the headlights that I was willing to mount them; I didn't want to mount them on the exterior of the front bumper.

so educate me a bit please

How do you get away with having a laser jammer in cali when it states that No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects and no person shall use, buy, possess, manufacture, sell, or otherwise distribute any device that is designed for jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

I do really just want to know.

Laser Interceptor is a bit more advanced than regular jammers. You can buy a switch for it where if you flick the switch it will erase all laser jammer software on the device and turn it into parking sensors. So when the cop shoots it with laser, nothing goes off. You tell him to wave his hand in front of it and then it goes off like a parking sensor. Then you just get home and plug it in and reload the software.

How much is that switch and do you get it from them as well?

The switch itself I think is just an extra $30. Laser Interceptor sells them directly. You just state that you want the "Instant Kill" Panic Switch.

Yup. It's one of the main reasons I went with the LI due to them being illegal here in Cali.

sorry for the late reply...was autoXing yesterday.

The Blinder unit is controlled by the dial switch (positions 0 through 3);
0- off
1-parking assist
2-receive only
3- receive & jam

if I was in a state that didn't allow jamming, I'd just switch it to position 2 (at some point prior to being actually pulled over).

while I bought the car in LA, I actually live in the Seattle area, where it's legal. (most used luxury cars are about $4K cheaper in the LA area compared to Seattle...)

another note: if you get hit with laser, you can just turn it to position 2 (or lower) after you slow down. Most laser guns will report if it's being jammed, however "jammed" doesn't always mean it's from a jammer...sun reflection and many other natural things can prevent the laser gun from picking up your speed; the closer you get to the laser gun with it "being jammed", the more likely it's actually due to a laser jammer. so just slow down quickly, and turn it off.
