Yes, it settles after a few minutes. I actually think it's louder when the screen is displaying "brighter" things like navigation. When its displaying the radio with the dark grey background it's not quite as loud, but still very noticeable. It's more of a hiss than a whine, like if you left your home theater speakers on at full volume but turned off the source. Of course almost all of the "elder" folk that I've asked say they don't notice it, but all of my "younger" friends do.

I get the feeling that there's a hiss to some degree on all iDrive screens. Just that some people either don't notice it over their music or road noise, or it isn't as loud as mine =(

I have 4K miles and no issues. I am extremely picky about my cars. The Service guys at BMW know me by name. The slightest vibration or a nominally and I am at the dealer.

You guys with issues need to document everything. Who you talked to at the dealership and BMWNA. Follow the lemon law for you state. If BMW does not fix you car (5 tries in Idaho) you get a new car. I did just that with my Tacoma and I got a new truck through the Arbitration process. It was really simple and most people don’t understand the process so they hassle with a lemon car.
It happens on all brands. I have owned four Toyota Trucks that were flawless and just got a lemon that had lots of problems.

3000 miles and I'm amazingly happy.

If I heard ANYTHING out of the usual I would be winging. If anything wasn't working I'd be moaning about it.

Wow, i have 10,000 miles on mine; 3,000 of which came on a Montana road trip. I have had no rattles (except the change in my door--since been removed), no electronic issues, my car is extremely tight, drives like a dream, and is probably the best built car i have ever owned.

so there...maybe your's was the one that was recently smashed by the building--or you just have bad luck with cars.

I have 5800 miles, almost 6 months and the only slight little creak is in the center console arm rest. Only when I lean on it hard putting most of my weight on it to pull myself up in the seat.
Other than that i have had no problems and that creak only happens once in a while.
