WTF? Did they do it to me

The story goes like that. I have escaped from my family to come up to North Victoria for a few days of covering job.

Last night I travelled up there, settled in the motel, brought something from Wolly and spray the dead insect away... I saw the tyre red light indicator on the dash. I thought $hit.

I went to a local servo which is just 500m up the road in 50kmh zone anyway and confirm the worst - the rear driver tyre has a nail in it and has 33psi left.

Long story shot I got it patched today at a local Bridgestone dealer. Then when I rechecked the pressure at lunch time I found this!?! I have no camera with me that the stupid Nokia is not doing any good....

The area is rough but just judging the pattern. Did they do it? Or it is a stone chip?

I am not planning to fix it until I manage to kerb the wheel. Which I have a habit of doing....

Two marks close to each other - pretty unlikely to be a stone chip.

Reckon the tyre dealer should be paying for this.

+1, no way that it could be a stone chip. Not on wheels and definitely not that close to each other.

It is hard to prove now once I left the tyre shop. Bad luck I will say...

Not a stone chip. More likely one of their tire tools slipped...

Hmmm interesting....

Where was this JAXX?

Also, any recommendations for tyre replacers would be great - my rears desperately need replacing.. Beaurepaires? Jaxx?

If you live or work anywhere near the city, I recommend Ricc de Georgi at Tyresome in Riley St, East Sydney. He does tyre replacements for an amazing range of sports car owners (GT Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Astons etc.) and he's always done a good job with sharp prices for the many tyre replacements on my Boxster.

When I switched out my runflats the tyre shop left lever marks all over my rims. They bought me 4 new rims from BMW at a cost of $3200 then got me to sign a form to say that the matter was settled and i would not hit them up for any further costs. I have heard since that their policy now is that they do not touch runflat tyres at all.

I am surprised Taka that the tyre shop needed to remove the tyre from the rim to repair the puncture. The standard thing to do would be just to put a vulcanising plug into the nail hole and pump the thing up. I've repaired lots of tyres this way myself and don't see why RFTs would be any different.

Thanks mate - may do this in the New Year. My lease covers tyre replacement so i just need my leasing company to book the car in.

I never thought of the pain it would take to remove the RFT's from the rim. But obviously it is an issue i never thought of. Thanks for the tip!

I will not drive any plugged repair to be honest. Patch is the way to go. My rear heats up from time to time. If the plug fails then I would be in deep $hit. There are apperently plug and patch combo up there.

Repairing those 2 chips is a mere $150 (no need for new wheels) and it will be good as new. However, I don't see why it is difficult to take them out. I have other rims putting semi slicks on and they are 4 times as strong in the side wall area.

Stone chip theory. I do check my track rims on my other car all the time and there are stone chips on the spokes ... all over in all 4 rims. So chips are possible even you are on a single car track sprints. Winton and Sandown has tonnes of stones.... that sticks on my semis too.

EDIT: In fact, when I recheck the pressure a day later (still no leak btw). I saw similar but smaller mark on a spoke of the other rear wheel, which has been painted about 2 months ago. So I was right!

Not that I have a lot of puncture. First one in last 10 years (touch wood). Next time I will be more careful.
