Watkins Glen anybody?
Thought I'd throw it out there, in case any of the regulars might want to give a world class circuit a try.
I signed up yesterday, at Genesee Valley Chapter's website... I know a lot of you guys have never done track events, and this is a fun, safe (lots of run out), and incredibly historic track to cut your teeth on. GVChapter has a novice program that makes it pretty cheap to run your first event too... |

Driving up Thursday afternoon. Want to have time to make Friday morning a gut-wrenching miserable experience getting up, hurl a few times, bottle of Tums, etc. Then go drive as fast as I possibly can. ;-)
Usually head over to Seneca Lodge, where there's cold liquids and the usual redneck memorabilia all about, except the redneck memorabilia is not redneck... it's real racing legend stuff... you could spend a good bit of time looking at it.. and find all kinds of amazing stuff. |

larry, what are you thoughts on Watkins Glen for novices? I hear it's a stupid fast course, but not nearly as technically challenging as NHMS.
Would you recommend HPDE insurance for a novice?

I would suggest hitting up youtube for lapping videos of WGI.Another thing.. stupid, but true.... I bought a video game for my xbox 360 with WGI on it, before I drove it for real 3 years ago.. It helped. Oh, make sure you look at the track configuration that you'll be running on. I'll be doing the full loop, but it might be configured for the Nascar setup, which cuts off a decent chunk of the circuit. Novices should have no issues. There are technical parts, and you have to learn the braking zones, but unless you're doing the exact opposite of what your instructor is telling you to do, you're not going off the back side of a braking zone. Drive within your limits, and you're more than fine there. The passing zones for the novice run groups are huge areas. |

Thanks for the comparison to NHMS. I've done two events at NHMS and take corners 2b, 3 and 12 gently because of the run-offs. HPDE is an amazing amount of seat time, and your write up on the 'Glen sounds like it's a great track. Now to check my calendar and see if my wife wants to take a trip to NY.

I changed my plan last night for this trip... Was Fri, Sat, Sun @ the Glen... Now I'm doing Fri @ Monticello, and Sat-Sun @ the Glen. CANNOT WAIT!
