Carjacked new 325 at SDSU

I saw this headline scrolling across the bottom of a news report yesterday, said it was a new 325, although the exact model not mentioned here: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/5130087/detail.html

That wasn't you Bella was it?

That's good! As far as it being a zoo, lately it seems that way. I went there 15+ years ago for my Masters, had thought it'd be fine for my daughter (who's a hs senior this year) to go to. Although she has no interest in that, will likely go out of town, is hoping USC.

Now don't let people scare you about USC's area. Yes it is bad, but you just need to use common sence. I never had an issue during 4 years, nor did any of my friends.

I wasn't so much concerned about the area, but the cost! We're not rich, I know how expensive an institution that is. I told my daughter, you'd better be getting some scholarship $ if you want to go there. I am hopeful about those prospects, she's got a good record grade-wise, and is involved in some activities in responsible roles -- is editor in chief of the hs newspaper (she's interested in journalism, has been on the school papers since about 7th grade, that's one reason for the interest in USC, we heard they have a good program for that), and also music, in band from 6th to 12th grade, was 1st flute last year, is head of woodwinds this year. Yeah, I'm bragging about my kid now... but it is scary contemplating the college costs ahead.

Yep, you really need to be smart about it. USC has very good programs for all of the interests that you listed. Good luck...to her, and to YOU ($$).

Plus....some USC kids are shuttle-bus'd to UCLA at night to hang out in Westwood.

"I've been up here 15 years. I've never seen violent crime back-to-back in my 15 years," said Lt. Robert McManus, of the university police.

Well, then do something LT....

The area surrounding USC, like other major universities in urban areas, has the good and the bad. Be street smart and don't let yourself become a victim.

USC's scholastic programs are among the best in the nation -- not to mention the sports program.

The only times I drove to Westwood was to a) eat ice-cream sandwiches and b) watch movie premieres. There is a feeling of snobbiness in Westwood, so if you crave that...go for it. Most of the time, I "kept things real" at the University of South Central.

University police said the string of crimes baffles them.

Yeah, I'd like those rent-a-cops looking after me!

Self-defense I learned from my big bro when I was a third grader: you take your ring of keys, clinch them in your fist so that your keys are jutting outwards from between your fingers - jab the hardest you can under the chin in the neck. From the side but preferrably straight into the throat.

Yeah, that might work if one guy was giving her a hard time in a bar. The article said two men. As much as I hate to say it, the best thing to do is give them the key and be glad you're okay. You can always hunt them down and kill them later.

What's up with SDSU? UCSD has a freaking on-campus police station.

Well, just be glad it's not as bad as John Hopkins.

As awful as that story is, that is not a carjacking.

That is a car theft and some overzealous editor.

Carjacking is when you are brought along for the ride. I had a friend in college at LSU who had two guys enter his car at a redlight and told him at gunpoint "to drive". He knew he was dead meat and jumped out of the car at 45mph. He was shot in the back and lost a foot of intestine.

Keep your doors locked!

noflash, thanks for clearing up the terminology.

A buddy of mines almost got carjacked when he was waiting at the light to get onto the I5 south in La Jolla - some dude ran over and attempted to open the passenger door but good thing he had it locked.

It's actually quite amusing that most of those carjacking you see on those "wildest police chases" videos happen when the carjacker simply run up to the passenger side of a vehicle, opens the door, and force the driver out. Apparently they've been taking notes while playing Grand Theft Auto.
