track tires a step up from Star Specs?
i'm heading up to Tremblant with the Boston chapter at the end of August for a 3 day DE. it'll be my first time there and my first time in the open run group on friday. i've done 12 days so far in total
a friend offered to loan me a set of 18" Breyton GTS-Rs that fit 245 r comps all around. i've gotten pretty used to staggered Star Specs on my OEM wheels (225/255), and it would make sense to learn a new track within the limits i'm used to, but i can't pass this up. i don't think i should go straight into full slicks, especially in case it gets wet out there, so i'm thinking something in between: R88s, NT-01s, V710s, .....? cup tires? would be great to hear a few thoughts from the 1ers

I've run a 245/40/18 square set up in BFG R1s, and in the Hoosier R6s. Both offer tremendous grip and predicatability without a "full" slick. If you think it might rain, the TOYO RA1 performs better in the we than the R888 does (and better in the dry IMO), but is harder to find than the R888. NT01 is also a good dual pupose, but not as good in the wet. If you are buying new, it is worth it to get them heat cycled (if they offer that from where you get them), it really does help the wear over the course of several days of use. I would suggest checking with member JPJP (see this thread.. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=468291) to see what he has. Can get some really good deals over buying new and they will give you a feel of the R-comp without the big bucks. inventory varies, but check with him.
I have a pair of 245/40/18 R6s that I took off my extra set of APEX ARC-8s if you want to find another pair. They have about 70% life left (ran one HPDE weekend). Just PM me if you are interested. Last edited by LA-Bimmer; 08-02-2011 at 02:23 PM.. |

I was linked to a similar thread of his on another BMW forum from some friends who have purchased several sets from him and were always very happy with the result. The last time I was picking up a set, he did not have the size I needed at the time and I had to get something quick for an upcoming HPDE. I'll definitely get with him each time to see what he has. So many race teams or individual racers just use the tires for a very limited period as they want every possible .1 second per lap. I have a few folks like him that have connections and pick up sets from all over the country. I don't expect I'll ever pay anything close to retail again. I just picked up two sets of 275/35/18 Continental Grand AM tires that are almost new (just like the R6 without the grooves) for my other car for $500 shipped (total for both sets). These would be over $300ea. new. Another good site for those who are interested is nasaforums.com. There is a tire/wheel for sale section there that my friends and I have used over the years on several occasions. Glad to help
