Great read, wish they compared the N54 version of the 135i though

That stuff about being able to downshift in the middle of a turn with the manual gearbox didn't make any sense to me. Even with a manual, I get all my shifting done before the turn. Same with DCT.

there are times when one may need to upshift during a turn..... Turn 11 at road Atlanta for example..

downshift though.. not as much.....

I mean absolutely no offence by this, but I must take issue with this article.
The provided list of parts adds to $22,835, not $18,000. Without the cosmetic iCarbon bits, the total modifications cost is $20,038 (and is labor included in the numbers given?). With the listed msrp of $40,375 (although a 2012 that I spec'd to have the same options as a 2011 1M ran $44,500), the total cost of a tuned 135i (without the cosmetic bits), is $60,413. 2011 1M optioned the same is $54,035.
Also, I don't know if all dealerships in the States are tuner friendly, but up here in Canada, most aren't. So how much gas would you have to spend to make up for that?
So if "we're comparing apples to apples, then the cost of the two cars should be a determining factor in the selection of a winner": where does risking warranty and paying $6378 more for the car, come into play?

Not flaming, just curious

(I've dumped massive amounts of money into a WRX before, for it to only marginally beat a STI at best, while having run me a lot more money than a STI, so truly, no disrepect here)

Also have to remember that the LSD for the DCT is extremely expensive at that $4600 figure. If the car was 6MT it would be much much cheaper. Closer to $1500 I believe?

I was just starting to ask the same thing.. i didnt immediately see the $$ figures..

Anyone can spend their money to modify a non M car to a performance level equal to or above the non M car. And it performance is the only factor.. then the tuned vehicle is probably always going to win out. in reality though.. the tuned vehicle doesn't have the looks , cachet. exclusivity, or resale value of the M car.. The Wrx to STi situation is exactly the same. I am sure one can take a Mustang to Saleen or Steeda and make their own version of a Boss 302... but it simply is a tuned car.. not the original. Anyone that wanted a 1M with DCT and/or a sunroof now knows where to go though...

I have no problems conceding the " win".... because I am absolutely ecstatic knowing that I made the better purchase.

From my reading of the article, the biggest difference in the end was the "violent acceleration" and raw power. All that comes from a sub $1000 chip that will work just fine on the N54 equipped 1M and give the same HP and torque levels. Then what?

Upshift agree, but I don't think DCT would cause any issues in that situation.

The author is complaining about downshifts though and that makes very little sense to me.

The 'M' button description was off. Must have thought it had the same functionality as the M3.

Author spent very little time comparing the suspensions (other than the traction issue) and then at the end we find out they have similar levels of grip, but the 135i has good ride quality.

Learned very little from this article unfortunately.

Maybe the 2012 isn't as good as the 2011 car!

Two great cars and just a matter of personal preference at this point.

agree on the two great cars... but I don't think it's a matter of personal preference at all but rather a matter of happenstance or circumstance.... as in.... I have a 135 and I want to make it faster....

I really doubt that anyone that had the opportunity to buy a 1M would have said.. no... forget the 1M... I'll go ahead and buy a new 135 and throw 18K in performance parts at it. I mean.. no one wants a sunroof or DCT or their favorite shade of blue that badly right?

Fair point. However, it did happen! The #2 in line at my 1st dealer where I was #3 in line bailed due to no DCT.

To each his own I guess.
