Ok...so how fast can I really take the corners?
I would like to know how fast my 330i, 6sp, sport package can go on a 90 degree turn. I don't want to endanger myself, but I keep hearing about the 3 series handling. Thus, if I'm about to make a right or left turn, up to what speeds do I not need to slow down and still can make that turn?

That depends on a lot of things. The slope of the road, how clean the road surface is, the condition of your tires, the line you take, how safe it would be to take a 90 degree right at a high rate of speed, etc.
On a right, start wide left, turn in towards the corner and exit wide left again. Steady throttle, no braking or real acceleration until you are exiting the turn. Try it 5mph faster each time and report back! |

As fw10ring mentioned, there are a lot of factors to determine corner speed. I think you might be more interested in the 330's roadholding grip, measurable in lateral g's (skidpad rating).

Get a feel for the car and figure it out for yourself. There's absolutely no way we can tell you how your particular car will perform through a particular corner - when it comes down to it, it's not a matter of numbers, but a matter of feel.

as fast as is safe considering the corner(off camber? lots of run-off room if you screw up), the conditions(Dry, wet, dirty?), other cars, and your skill.
Based on the way the question was asked I'd say your skill level isn't advanced. DO NOT try to go fast through corners, if you're going even a little too fast and the car gets slightly out of control, you probably don't have the skills to catch it, and could damage yourself, others, and property.... |

I want to see that too. Drifting is really big here and really an art form of precise control and speed.

Without drifting, I think I took a corner at 40. But then again, its hard to tell because the speed is varying and you usually dont look at your speedometer when making a quick 90 degree turn.

i don't know about a 90º turn but i did a 100º - 110º at 50mph and the car felt very stable, although the DSC kicked in right away.

Theres a road close to my house that nobody is ever on and the pavement is in really good shape. the speed limit on this road is 80km/h and there is a sweet little quick switchback that is a 90degree right and then a 90 degree left. this is a 2 lane highway (1 lane each way). There is a warning speedlimit sign that says Max of 35km/h through this section. So my buddy was asking me why I spent so much money on a stupid german car when I should have bought a nice new truck - I told him to get in - and I took him for a ride. With good visibility I drifted over to the oncoming lane and started to pick up speed, I picked a really sweet racing lane ( hitting both apexes ) and blasted through the switchback at 158 km/h (97mph?) The car started to push wide on the exit, but I was able to throttle stear the back to put the car back on line. I was FLAT OUT Amazed by what this car could do, the balance, the handling, the communication through the steering wheel was bang on. My buddy was hanging on to the grab handle the hole way through, and i swear I heard his but cheeks clench up (hahaha). Anyway he said if I ever do that with him in the car again he would kill me (lol)
Well thats just one of my stories Good Luck with your car. Later |

Get some orange parking cones and find a huge open parking lot with no cars, people, carts, or any other obstacles you might crash into.
Just set up the cones as if it's a 90 degree turn and see what your baby can do. It's really all about getting a feel...and you have to push the limits to see what you can and can't do. An empty parking lot is a safe place to do this so you won't endanger your car, yourself, or anyone else. |
