No more tire rack to OZ?

Friend of mine ordered some tyres from tire rack.
Got money refunded and they said they don't ship to oz anymore. Apparently our government has stopped it due to "undercutting" the local market.

Wtf?!!?

that would suck big time if that is the case Adin!

I suppose we would have to use freight forwarder...

They were hit and miss anyway.

I doubt it was the Aus government that intervened in this, more likely local vendors complaining to the manufacturers who in turn have the muscle to pressure its US vendors.

You could just ship to a US address then get it shipped here I guess. That does suck though. I have used them a few times and saved loads.

Adin, if that's true, then it's going to suck when I have to replace the Cups. Only one or 2 places I know who can get them locally by special order. Takes weeks to order them too!

How so Raj?

I've admittedly never ordered a set but have always had them as an available option and know people who've had them on M3s and 911s.

FWIW - I shopped tyres pretty hard about 3 months back, including Tirerack. I ended up buying "grey" imports locally.

For what I wanted it was under the $1000 threshold. Getting them from the US was a bit cheaper, by not much. And I didn't have to find a fitter, and ferry tyres around to get them fitted.

I also looked at the board member that has a connection with a tyre place (TyrePower, I think) in Melbourne. Price, including freight, was about the same as getting them in Sydney, so less hassle to buy local.

I would comment, not all of the places that do "grey" imports are the same. Do your research, and you'll be fine.

The only potential "issue" I saw with my approach (same as getting from Tirerack) is, if you happen to be unlucky and get a defective tyre, I doubt the local importer will help. Two questions on this - 1. When did you last get a bad tyre from a quality brand? 2. Given you're paying less than half-price, could you cope if you did have a bit of bad luck?

I believe it and it's only the beginning of things to come. Buying from overseas (either Europe or US) is only gonna get 1000 times harder. It's a combination of local vendors screaming out and the government will take some drastic measures to make it no longer worth while to order Internationally.
I have one thing to say about the Australian Government and that is they can go and kiss my hairy @ss.

Government won't do a thing about these things, especially with free trade agreements. Vendors just like to blame the government when they have got nothing to do with it.

Correct!

Ask a tyre retailer, especially an idependent, how much margin they make on a tyre - it's not very much. It's the local distributors - Michellin Aust, Continental Aust, etc that are doing the gouging, and they've been found out.

This is just like the Gerry Harvey bleatings of a year or so back - they're just pi$$ed that they've been found out, and people are going around them - Serve them right I say.

If you want to prove the point, get the retail price of a set of tyres here, and compare to Tyrerack (who will be making a margin in the quote), add 10% for GST, and assume the local retailer makes someting less than 20% (someone may be able to advise more accurately). You'll see where most of the $ is going. And NO, local freight when they deliver by the truck load isn't very much - so BS to that one too!

Pity is, their greed will end up costing Australians their jobs.

Recently been quoted 7% after franchisers share.

Just order from tirerack and use a re-shipper
I definitely have to agree. for Vans - his pricing was good and great service.

Plus it feels nice to buy local and not feel like you've been shafted with a sand-paper wrapper.

Ben, there were a couple of local places who could get them but told me they didnt stock them and were special order tyres. Could've been BS though...Trivett Tyres wanted around 5k for the set too.

Good thing they only last around 10K kms...50c/km

They can't stop you from buying online and having the goods shipped to your Australian address. They can make it a little harder so that 90% of people give up.
