One thing about choosing brake fluid that is under appreciated is viscosity. I believe BMW brake fluid is low viscosity for better ABS operation. And I believe 5.1 is lower viscosity than some DOT 4 fluids. I have no clue where it sets relative to BMW 4. |

I was talking about 5.1 , not 5. I know they are not the same and I think I can use 5.1 in the bmw brake system. Let's see if everybody agrees Thanks !!! |

Can someone confirm that for my 2009 135i 6MT, I live in Ontario I would use the following:
Differential: Redline 75W90 GL-5 Transmission (6MT): Redline D4 ATF - or should I use D6? |

D6 is too thin. Go with D4.

I went to redline's website to see what they recommend for my manual transmission (2009 e88). They recommend D6 automatic transmission fluid (but say you could use D4 which is a little thicker). I have their MTL 75W80 in mine. It may be a little stiffer when it's cold but it doesn't get that cold here and it seems fine to me. If the MTL was graded as engine oil, it would grade 5W30 according to Red Line. That doesn't seem excessively thick to me. I'm about due for a change, however, and may use D4. I guess I am old school but in previous cars I've used the same lubricant in the rear end and the manual transmission. So I tend to want to use thicker lubricant but I should probably go with what the manufacturer recommends.
For what it's worth, I believe Mike Miller recommends MTL for all BMW manuals. It is recommended by Red Line for the early ones but not the latest. Red Line is recommending fluid closer to what BMW uses. Most manual transmissions are splash lubricated. The gears turn through oil which gets thrown up as a mist to cover the surfaces that are not immersed. So thicker fluid will increase drag a little. The only risk I see of thicker is it may not get into small spaces as well. My car has been functioning fine with MTL for nearly 30K miles. But the risk of poor lubrication are not really in a distance this short. It's how much noise will it make and will the synchros be fine at 100K+ miles.

Planing on flush/fill all my fluids this weekend starting with the shortest service interval fluids first. I'm a little over 41k and have a couple of questions, is our N54 coolant capacity 11L? If so do I need that much coolant? I read somewhere that not all comes out when the coolant drain plug is opened. Brake is 1L right?
Here is the stuff: *Castrol 0W40 Titanium (Engine) *Pentosin DOT4-LV (Brakes) *Pentosin Pentofrost NF-G11 Blue (Coolant) *Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-140 (Differential) *Pentosin MTF 2 SAE 75W-80 (Transmission) Anyone does not recommend any of the items listed and why? Let me know, thanks.
