My opinion is very biased and based on my own short comings....

There is no way in heck I would go from a 335i to a 128i. Given you're going to a convertible there is a weight penalty and the fact that you've known the joy of having that power on demand, I'd definitely be afraid I'd be kicking my own A$$ down the road. But I'll admit, I'm a bit of a speed freak and knowing that I could have had more would drive me nuts.

4K difference when spending 45-50K...that's less than 10%...or a nice set of wheels and tires and you get better brakes to boot...not a chance for me. Besides that you're leasing? What's the difference in payment, dinner at Wendy's? Nope...no way.

128i. I have a 135i but I vote 128i. If you can get one with the sports package you'll enjoy them. I have driven 6mt and it's one hell of a ride. Not at all "underpowered". With the 35 practically any gear will make you go fast. But with the 28, shifting it required... In other words more skill and more effort is out into it. I personally feel I get more of a "fun" ride in the 28. Not to mention insurance and gas mileage. The 35 is also a great option. Btw I drove the coupe on the manual.. So idk how much slower it would be with a convertible.

When I was shopping equivalently optioned 135s and 128s were only a 2k difference...times change I guess.

How do you like the 335? A 135 vert and a 335 coupe weigh the same ~3500 lbs give or take options.

Ive spent the last 4 years of my life in syracuse...a very snowy city. I can say that despite my own best efforts ive only stuffed the car once I to a snow bank

That being said. If you bought the 335 for the power I think youll be fairly disappointed in the 128.

The 135 vert is a very competent convertible to the point that in many situations when competing with a coupe its a drivers race...ie the better driver will win - its that close in terms of performance.

Heres a picture I love to share when discussing snow performance. You have nothing to worry about.

If you ever think the 135 has too much power, drive slower. Problem solved

128 Owner here, Love my car but if I could have gone into a 135 for only 4 grand difference i'd be driving a 135. More power is always better.

Yes times do change man. The difference in base price from an 08 135 to now is almost 6k difference. I'm kinda upset I couldn't afford one when they first came out haha.

To the op: like I tell everyone with this same question do what feels right for you. Do listen to people's opinions of the performance and not the "the 135 is better" comments. After having my 135 almost a month I'm fairly certain I could have been happy with a 128 as far as performance goes with a manual. Not that i have buyers remorse i love my 35s power (and more standard features xenons sport bumpers etc) but barley get a chance to use it fully often. I do more city than highway driving and gas milage is a joke haha. Check out my mpg thread (not that any of us buy these cars to be economical of course lol). Also you sound like you can appreciate the R&D behind a well put together bmw NA engine and true this will be the last for awhile.

Lastly I understand where it's hard to wrap your mind around 50+k for a 1 series. Sometimes you're just like really for a 1er lol. I felt the same way. But truly the prices on all of them are out of the park now. I never would have thought when I was a kid and my dad had his e30 and e36 that I would in my lifetime see a 3 series cost 60k but they can now. The days of the moderately expensive BMW died with the e46.

In my case, I already owned a modded 335i E92 when we bought my wife's 128i M-Sport convertible with 6MT. We added black grilles and logos, a BMW Performance Exhaust, 18" CSL-style wheels and non-runflats, and a wind deflector. We both love the car - not near as fast as a 135i would be, but no slouch, either, and it's a nice balance of handling and power. Zero issues with the engine, too, although I'm sure the N55 is also problem-free these days. I hope so, because I've ordered an F30 M-Sport 335i.

I test drove a 128 before I test drove a 135: ordering a 135 was an easy decision.

If a local BMW dealer does not have any to test drive just look for some local privately owned cars that are for sale and take a couple for a spin.

If you're coming from a 335 I think the 135 is a no brainer. I bet the 128i is a blast to drive but there is no doubt in my mind you will be disappointed in the power.

My first test drive was in a 128i. The dealer's 135i had been banged up by somebody on their staff. It was a nice car and seemed comparable to an A5. When I finally got to test drive a 135i it was Yeeehaaa and now I'm on year 4 and still love the power. If I were less inclined to use the power, a 128i would have made way more sense because you get 90% of the same experience for thousands less. I just love using that extra 10%.

I think any 1 series is a more enjoyable ride than any 3 series except for the M3. Even the M3 is bigger and feels less lively than my 1 series. But the M3 also has a really nice NA V8. To me smaller and lighter = more fun. So on my scale, I don't buy the conclusion that if you own a 335 you have to go to a 135 or you will be disappointed. I'd rather drive my 128i than a 335i.

The NA engine delivers power different from the turbo. The NA is noticably weaker at low rpm but just keeps picking up steam as it rushes to redline. The turbo motor is much more torquey low but starts to fall off near redline. I like the NA motor power delivery but I can see why others might not.

If you want to be sure you have plenty of power, however, I think that says 135i. Not only does it have more stock, it is much easier to turn up the boost than it is to get equivalent increases in a NA motor.

Jim

P. S. for those that are curious, I have driven all three, the 135i, 128i and M3. I haven't driven the 135 and M3 as much but I've driven all 3 on the performance center track. I've only driven 328 and M3 3 series but I think I've had enough exposure to know they are bigger and feel less lively.

I've also driven all three cars and would still rank the 135i on top with the M3 in the middle. For daily driving, a turbocharged engine delivers many more smiles per hour as you don't have to wind it up to feel the power. It's just there.

I think the weight of the 135 vert is the same weight as the 335. if that is the case why does the 1 feel more lively than the 335?

Went with the 135is

Angler, Best wishes on your car decision! After extensive test drives I went with the 135is convertible over the 135i or 128i. Comparing the 135i to a heavily optioned 128i, I felt the 135i was a better value overall in that the extra $4K or so buys a car with very different capabilities and a bit of a more muscular look IMHO. 128i is a great ride, no doubt, but the ever-present torque of the turbo motor when matched with a 6SPD (for me at least) manual was just such a joy to test drive.

If you talk yourself into the 135i with the Sport Package, for about the price of the technology package upgrade you can step up to the 135is. 135is won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, I thought the extra $2,400 or so bought quite a bit of visual and performance improvements to merit the price. So yes, I fell right into the marketing trap of incremental price increases for better perceived value!

Good luck!

The 1 has a shorter wheelbase and also sits lower than a 3. It also seems to have a little different suspension settings but I don't know that for sure. I think anybody who drove both would notice the 1 seems more tossable.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for the input. When I went to my dealer and told them I was considering both the 128 and the 335 my sales person whom is the gm just laughed at me. His response was really, you will never be happy with the 128 considering how adamant you have been around the bigger engine the past two cars. After thinking about it and taking my e92 out for some spirited driving I would tend to agree. I think I would be aggravated within two days of having the car, that I didn't get the bigger engine. Leasing a car for 3 years and being pissed at myself that I gave up the N55 for a couple lunches at Chiptole on a monthly basis would not be a fun thing. So N55 is the choice. Again thanks for all your input it was very helpful!
