But I found this car, the price was right and I love it. Just thinking of how I can slow it down for my son, at least for a while until I can trust him. |

Disconnect the wastegate vacuum lines from the vac canister and plug them. It will run with the WGs open and be as if it has no boost. Not sure if there are any long term effects of doing this though, but an option.

So I solved my dilemma on what to do for my son who is now 16 years old.
I got him this Mustang to practice on: It's a 4.0 V6 with 5-speed. Has true duals with an x-pipe, intake and hotter coils. Sounds great, quick, but not fast, really torquey and he loves the manual trans. I'm letting him drive the 135i here and there. If he keeps his grades up, he'll transition to the BMW and I'll sell the Mustang and get something new for me. It looked like this when we bought it: Last edited by Seaice; 04-30-2017 at 10:24 AM.. |

The OP is a real dummy! Why would any sensible parent consider buying a performance oriented car for his child?
A parent with some common sense would make sure his child got proper driving instruction maybe at high school. The next thing he would do is get a car in good mechanical shape that has a good safety record. That is how has it stood up to government crash testing? Reliability is another factor to consider and of course, cost. Any benefits come with responsibility and rules. Did you make the kid earn the right to have a car maybe with good grades and behavior? Oh and slowing the car down? When he runs into a tree, that'll solve that problem! |

So, you've bought your 16yo son a bolt-on modified V6 Mustang? Compared to the 1er it's a dog of a car, probably, but still bro... A modified Mustang?
Actually, I'm not that much older than your son, and the way my parents did it in the first months of me having a driving license was that I'd drive whenever we were going somewhere. Two, three months later when it was decided I am good enough to go on my own, they'd let me. It comes down to the person. I spent lots of time reading books/articles, applying the theory into practice in empty places and whatnot, and I was very aware of what a 300hp, 3,500lbs car can do when you mash the throttle. The bottom line is he can get in big trouble even in that V6 Mustang. Or a POS Accord. The car doesn't matter. Sign him up for some driving courses, at least. In the end, though, it's your money and life, so do whatever you want to do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow. Interesting comments. If the kid is perceptive enough to understand momentum and willing to learn how to control it, he will be safe. No matter if is it a POS Accord or a 300 hp Mustang.

Most kids will drive whatever car they have to the limit and beyond it. Thus, the logic most people have to give kids a slow car. It's hard to kill yourself in a 140hp Volvo. At least when you make a mistake trying to drift around a corner it will be at 30mph, not 80.
During my time working at the dealership in the early 2000's, I'd see kids have their wrecked M3's and 330's towed into our collision center at a much higher rate than 318's and 325's. My personal favorite was a kid who wrapped his brand new e46 m3 around a tree and had the passenger side mirror snap off and hit him in the face. He hit his brakes through a turn when the tires broke loose and spun out. |

Honestly really depends on the kid at 16 my first car was a 1998 Mercedes e320 I pushed that car a few times got pulled over for speeding once but let go since it was minor then a few months later I got a 2006 Mazda rx8 man I loved that car but again pushed it only when I felt safe and the conditions were safe few months later I got a 2008 clk550 now that car if you don't know is a na v8 380 hp I used to race that car at drag strip and keep it off the street for the most part I couldn't resist a few temptations here and there but again no tickets and the only accident was when some old lady crashed into me and I lost that car that's when I got the fastest car I've owned and it was a CL55 amg 500hp before the tune headers and pulley now that car o drove way more calmly than the last few still raced at track and occasionally when I couldn't resist on the street but only when there was no other cars yes I know it doesn't make it any better but after I blew 2 transmissions and a supercharger on it I sold it to get the 135i I have now btw I'm 20 so hope this stupidly long paragraph helps. So far in my 4 years of driving I've had 2 accident , 1 in the Clk I got hit by the old lady and the other I got rear ended after a month of owning the 135i. no matter what car he gets he's gonna test it one day or have "fun" one day.

regardless of what hp a stock car has... I don't know any 16 year olds who keep their cars stock. Let alone a 135i... that's like a gold mine for a teenager to modify. If you think in stock form it's too quick, you should really not give it to him considering for 300$ the car could have another 80-100 horsepower. Sell it and get him a 128i or an e46 330CI. those are great BMW's for a high schooler and still very nice cars for someone at that age

To answer the original question.... have MHD create a custom map targeting a lower load value, or ask them to create a custom map which remaps the throttle pedal to only allow 50% max throttle at full pedal travel.

Should have just bought a used FR-S lol. Sorry, I had to. I tell my wife all the time that an FRS or BRZ is a great car for a teenager who wants to look sporty and fast but isn't. I hate those cars.
Good luck with the Mustang. I think it will last provided the upgrades were done by someone reputable. Just make sure your son doesn't have the means to slap a new supercharger and gears on it. |

This is how I imagine people in this thread You can get into trouble with any modern car. They're all capable of 100+mph. Also where's this 300hp number from? V6 Mustangs are barely above 200 I would just go into a parking lot when it's raining and show him how to handle oversteer, handle a spinout, etc. Just get acquainted with how RWD likes to break loose. |

Yeah I've heard your stupid argument many times. And I'd bet your son is also a fucking genius just like you. It's like the argument that pit bull owners have their dog is a friendly tail-wagging mutt until he kills their kid or a neighbor. Over my lifetime, I've been to many funerals of clowns killed in cars. They all thought they were great drivers and could speed around in their fast rides. Like you, their attention was focused on how fast their car was, and not on the environment they were driving in. Actually when dummies die due to inattention or texting, speeding, drugs, or whatever I say good riddance or one less asshole who might kill me. The exception is when they kill an innocent which is often likely. Adios Stupid! |
