Why isn't the M3 and M5 this way then? I'm confused. Are you saying a X5M is not a true M and the same will apply to the 1?

Quicker maybe, but if they keep limiting the top speed to 155mph like they do in all their other cars, then the original M1 will technically be faster. Top speed in that is 161mph. With the limiter off, obviously it will be faster, but still, the new 1series won't be mid-engined, and won't be considered a "supercar". Its just not the same as it used to be. BMW needs to get up off their asses and develop a true supercar. Mercedes has one (well, "had" might be more accurate, but the SLR is still considered recent), Audi has one (a few more if you count Lambo), Porsche has a couple. WTF BMW? What are you waiting for? |

What's in a name? Would a rose not smell as sweet, or tires wear as fast?
Wow. 3 pages of what to call the M version of the 1 series. Seriously? Some of you won't buy one simply because it may not be badged "M1"? That kinda adds to the perception that some BMW enthusiasts are just brand name junkies. What's really important is that the car be made correctly with proper power and proper suspension that lives up to the soul of M car. I would think having it badged "1M" would be perfect for you guys who can't stomach it not being an M1. With a 1M badge you very easily simply swap the placement, and M1, voila! |

Differentiates it from the original M1 enough, but with a logical connection to the 1 series coupe... |

If they just call it the "1 series ///M", and not to use the ///M1 badge - that would be fine. In a marketing perspective, I think the car will need to have ///M badge, and without the '35', lets try some of these.
Joy is indulgence - the BMW 1 series ///M Joy is indulgence - the new BMW ///M Coupe Joy is indulgence - the BMW ///M2 Joy is indulgence - the BMW E82 ///M All of the above will only have a ///M badge except for the M2. I feel that although M2 will work, it is probably not their option as the 4 and 6 are niche products despite the 1er Coupe was supposed to be a 2 series and Scott did say they won't be using 2 for the current lineup. Seriously, I actually think they might just market it as the 1 series ///M, with ///M badge on the car and no other numbers. Of course, if you going to have a 1series MDrive - that would just be stupid.

Besides, nobody doubts that the Z4M is a true M, so I don't see any such connotation with the name 1M. Best regards, south

I'm betting on 1M or 135M.

OH? Is it because of that so called supercar from 30 years ago? That none of the new generation BMW will ever see and many new BMW owners ages 20 to 30 never heard about? Or is it the fact that the so called supercar was as fast as todays family cars? With a production of about only 400 cars.....No one but the flower power generation really cares ..lol Anyways , I can understand why some BMW historians would prefer to keep the M1 title for that 1 special car with limited production...but I really don't see why many refer to it as a supercar...it never was...not even for a 1978 model. Any historians out there that can put this into a different perspective for me, please do.

That's what I've been trying to say as well, but it seems the badge is a serious concern for some. Why the badge is a greater concern than the speculated performance, I don't know.
