Missing key....Questions
I just realized spare key for my 2012 128i is missing...I think I had it in the glove compartment (had to stash it there for something) and its not there or anywhere. Im wondering if someone could have taken it during a service appointment. Question is
- how much are these keys to replace? - what if I lose my only key, how the heck do i get a new one quickly? - if someone stole it, are these able to be sold and reprogrammed for another car? Thanks! |

I'm not sure how much they cost.. I think it depends but I know it's around 300-500. If you lost it you have to go to the dealer and they need to order one for you.. do not buy any on ebay, its fraud no one can program them for you. And if someone stole it it is highly unlikely they will be able to reprogram it. These BMW keys are no joke.
I would say if you don't need the key, don't order a new one.. In my opinion I wouldnt unless the car is a lease which they would make you pay for it at the end of the lease or if you share the car. |

Well $500 is the worst case scenario.. I honestly doubt its that high but I know it's no less then $300.. It's more likely $300-$400 lol sorry for the scare. I'd say look for it for a while unless you absolutely need it now, then contact the dealer.

Roughly $375 for the fob, and $75 for the metal key insert. If you have comfort access, then an hour or so to program it for your car. If you lose your only fob, then your car will have to sit or be towed until you can get another one from your dealer.

(I of course declined, but I did find some humor in key insurance). |

I had the dealer (independent, not BMW) I bought my car from order me a spare. He sold it to me at his cost (or what he said was his cost) - $180 for a non Comfort Access car. It was a plug n play - came out of the envelope ready to go. It might be worth contacting him. Even if he charges you $50 or $75 on top of the $180, it's still better than the $400 and $500 prices listed.
The guy's name is Matt Hayes, IQ Auto in Marietta, GA. Last edited by scott_b; 05-22-2013 at 09:05 PM.. Reason: content |

You guys kill me, not a one of you knows what you're talking about. Where do you get these 'facts'? Pull them outta yer arse?
A new BMW Key is $ 125 at my dealer, Passport BMW in Marlow Hts MD. You must take your title or registration to the Parts Department of your friendly dealer along with your driver's license. They will verify you are the owner and order you a new key off the VIN #, and it comes to them already programmed from BMW after you prepay the part. It takes 3 days. Those are the facts, gentlemen. |

Z3 key
My wife lost her key to our 2001 Z3 years ago. Rather than pay $350 for a new one we opted for a $75 non electronic one. Worked just like a valet key that also started the car. Just slip it into the door lock and and then into the ignition and off you go. Old School!!!

With such a wide range of costs being mentioned, I decided to look at RealOEM. For my car, it shows a MSRP of $352 regardless of whether the car has comfort access. I can see a dealer discounting this to 300 or so but not to 150. For other cars, it might be more or less but for a 2009 128i vert, this is what is shown:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...41&fg=50&hl=58 The path is shown at this link so it would be easy to put in a different vehicle and see the part number and MSRP. Jim
