Actually from my experience of people hating on the 1er, those people you describe are the opposite of the haters.

The enthusiast’s online e90post, M3post, bimmerfest, etc...

They are the one's I have seen talking shit.

The people driving around their stocker 3ers and 5ers could care less about their car, especially someone else’s 1-series.

Unlike you, I'm sure there are people out there that would buy an M3 or 335i simply because they can afford it, without really contemplating whether the 135i is a more enjoyable car for them. They are the people that would have a negative view of the 1 Series and they really don't get it.

BTW, this is a really good thread - a lot of opinions have been expressed that really nail down what this little car is about and the gap/niche it will fill.
