Registering out-of-state 135i for first time in California
Hey guys, I just moved to CA and I need to register my car. I found this guide which gives me a good idea of what needs to be done: http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/car...e-Registration
But what I'm unsure of is what to do regarding the "Application for Title or Registration" since my car is still financed. Technically BMW Financing is the owner of the car and they hold the title. Does this mean I will have to get BMW Financing to sign this form? I can't find any information regarding how to register a car in CA if it is being financed. Surely many people have done this.

I haven't done this yet, but I got the low down on it from a DMV rep.
* You need to have NY transfer your title to CA but you can still get a temp registration even if you don't have it yet. * You can go to the DMV with your current NY registration and then they will give you a temporary registration for 30 o 60 days (depending on whether or not you have a smog test I think). I'm sure there's more to it than this, but that's what I was told.

I was told that a smog is not necessarily required. I wonder if they'll be checking side turn signal colors and front license plate holder and such...

I bought mine in AZ. and when I went to register it here it took a bit of time. First of all they will physically inspect your car for safety and emissions reasons and to make sure it is a car that will conform to Ca. smog requirements. After that you will have to provide the title of the car to the DMV so they can transfer it into Ca. This was a real pain for me. You'll have to get BMW to send you or the DMV the title. After this you must provide a smog certificate to the DMV with your application. The car has to be smogged no matter what and then every other year after that. Registration cost is calculated based on the value of the car. Mine was about $350. They should give you your new plates at the office when every requirement has been met and fees paid. It's not really difficult but a huge inconvenience. I won't buy another car out of state. Good luck!

Do they actually check for cats? or do you just do everything at a smog station?
Would they send you to a ref station? Are they very picky about things like front plates? side markers? tint? |
