Has anyone have just the thermostat go out and not the water pump?

Just as I thought, nobody. Prove me wrong.

crickets, I changed just the water pump with a VDO brand from Germany, it says Continental on it so I'm assuming its the latest design.

Did the bleed procedure and its humming real nicely.

485 plus 3 bolts.

The thermostat is by all accounts a lot more reliable than the pump, so I would expect they would almost always fail later on.

When my water pump goes out, I'll replace just it. I don't subscribe to replacing parts that aren't broken or haven't failed. Of all the things least likely to fail, the thermostat falls in that category.

I remember a couple of posts where either a coil or injector failed and all six were replaced by the owner or technician. That's just plain crazy and expensive!

Right, have you seen the thermostat on the 135i? it looks pretty rugged. Besides it does appear that it can be changed out without removing the water pump, BTW the upper bolt is not easy to get to on that WP.

Mine went the other way around, but since they usually fail in pairs (or close to), I did the t-stat while I was in there.

Yeah very temping to change out the T stat, but I've search this entire forum and have not seen a T stat failure, just the water pump.

You should have done the thermostat while you were in there but since they usually fail open you'll probably be OK.

They say around 60K miles. That's pretty good for any car!

Mine failed at 50,000 kms...definitely a lot sooner than expected.

They are electric, so they fail earlier. But now the thread has been jackknifed to water pumps all over again.

Most replace the T stat as well because of the labour cost. The coolant needs to be drained and Water Pump removed to access the T stat, which is why it's just easier to do them both at once, replacing the T-stat as preventative maintenance
