Just got a 135i! Came from a Scion FR-S

Hi there 1addicts!

I purchased a used 135i a few weeks ago with 66k miles on the clock. I sold my Scion FR-S for this car. It sold for roughly the same price as the price I paid for the 135i.

At the same time, I also sold a 1997 Mazda Miata. I wanted to get back to just owning one car.

The reviews touted this car as a back-to-basics car but because I came from arguably even more back-to-basics cars, the 135i felt larger and more uninvolving. I still love the car nonetheless, albeit for different reasons than my previous cars.

Let me know if you would like my thoughts on how the switch felt. I look forward to being a part of the forum!

I had a blue Subaru BRZ, which is the same car as your FRS. I loved it so much that drove it all of 1900 miles in the year that I owned it :-) I did have a Subaru STi, and a 1M in between, before I bought my 135i and 135is vert, but the memory of the BRZ is impossible to expunge from my memory, as hard as I have tried. Cheapest interior I have ever experienced other than some rental cars like Chevy Aveos with hand crank windows I have rented from Enterprise. All the power of a Toyota Prius; I could go on, but I won't.

It sounds like you got rid of a go kart and a Ricky Racer.

Well...that's what it sounds like to me.

I feel like all the reactions to the twins are either "Love it" or "Hate it".

I had a more positive experience with the car; I enjoyed the handling and planted feel of the car. However, given your long resume of past and current cars I could see how a BRZ type of car would rub you the wrong way.

It's nice not having to worry about power anymore though lol. My FR-S couldnt pull worth a damn on uphill sections of a highway.

Lol I've always thought that the best solution was to just increase the displacement to 2.5L. The characteristics of N/A is retained, more power to satisfy critics, cheaper and less complex fix than adding a turbo.

Welcome to the forum. I have a 2000 Miata that I will probably never part with.
The 135i is a great GT car that can handle well for its weight with good suspension
mods. Love the 135i for the effortless acceleration, 85 mph cruising and straight six soundtrack. Love the Miata for that
back to basics light weight great handling. Very few cars can combine those two attributes
and be affordable.

this, the frs/brz feels less punchy than the outgoing n/a 2.5 impreza

I got a 135i, and im considering a frs down the line, you always want what you don't have

That's true, but I'm guessing you've never driven a miata or BRZ/FRS cuz they're absolutely superior "driver's cars" stock vs a 135i.

Thanks! Yes, those two are superior "driver's" cars but I feel the 135i is the superior "overall" car. I just wanted to try out a different driving experience.

I'm already loving the 1!

Yeah, the 1 is pretty much the best "all around" car you can get that's still fairly sporty with good mod potential.

My most indelible memory of my (now fortunately GONE) BRZ was a couple of years ago in the summer driving through the Idaho mountains on my way to Boise on a twisty 2 lane road with a 65 mph speed limit. I had the great misfortune to be behind about 75 ancient 1930's era collectors cars being driven on a rally, each going about 35 miles per hour. I manage to pass them all, over time, and at the very end I heard 30 seconds worth of continuous wretching from my 40 lb doodle in the vestigial back seat, as he vomited all over the (blankets) I had laid out back there. So I got to drive another hour and 15 minutes with the scent of dog vomit permeating the tiny cabin volume in that fake, gutless, "sports car." I think that was the trip that made me decide to unload the car.

I traded it in on an STi, which I still own. The car was virtually brand new when I traded it in, and it sat on that Subaru dealer's lot for 4 or 5 months before they found someone to buy it.

Funny story. I think I'd smell that smell every time I got in that car.

Welcome! And maybe you can solve a mystery for me. I was hitting the part of the freeway here in Dallas (121, north of DFW airport) where I can really drive my 135 hard. Suprisingly, a scion fr-s or subaru bzr kept up with me, which really surprised me at the speeds I was going (accelerating hard 60 to 100, him or her staying with me). Was that a mod car, or can they do that stock? I know it had to be modded, but was curious.

Possibly modified, but the FRS/BRZ is decently torquey down low. Unless you're WOT coming out of a corner, some cars are able to keep up.

There's no way my old FR-S accelerated anywhere near as fast as the 1.

Supercharger kits are common with these cars. I've seen some supercharger builds on the FR-S/BRZ forum.

Very nice! Welcome! I only test drove the BRZ and it was a couple years ago but I really did like the driving feel of that car. Ended up with my 128i just because the extra bit of refinement for DD helps a lot. But whenever I went to autocross last year, the FRS/BRZ cars there seemed like they're just perfect for that.

It's funny how these cars come up in car forums often being compared to cars twice their price. Reality is, for 28K you cant buy a better rwd drivers car (MK7 GTI would take it for overall).

Better question is why argue it? there's something for everyone. We all win w choices.
