Alarm LED?

My 2013 135i has the bubble under the rear view mirror and I was assuming that upon locking the car the led would be activated same as on my F30 3 series. But I'm not getting any blinking red light. Is this normal for 1 series and if not, has anyone figured out a repair other than completely replacing the mirror assembly. I know it's not a big deal but would kinda like to have the red led feature.
Thanks!

You know, I never thought about that. I thought pretty much all BMW's came with an alarm! LOL! Is there an option code that would tell you if you have the alarm function?

Yes you can read the codes to see if you have one.
What colour is the dome? Is it red like a clown nose or smoked grey?
Mine is grey and I don't have an alarm. I tried coding the led on but no luck in getting a dummy alarm light working.

My first 1er came pre-wired for the alarm. The option code for this when I look it up is 5GA - Prep. Anti-theft Alarm System, which you can check in a VIN decoder. I had the alarm installed at my dealer back in 2008 but I don't remember exactly how much it cost. I think more than $500. Could've been more like $700, I just don't remember. My 2nd 135i did not have this option.

If you have an alarm installed, when you open the trunk with the manual key (while armed), the alarm siren will be activated.

According to my "Build Sheet" my'08 E88 had the same prewire, but it apparently got the alarm installed along the way. The light flashes in that smoked gray dome. And the alarm will go off if you open the hood with the car locked. The crowd at the Cars & Coffee then know where you are.

Mine is Red, and doesn't have the alarm either. I don't think dome color is a direct indicator. Also, mine wasn't even pre-wired for the alarm.

Can anyone tell me how to determine if you car is prewired for an alarm? Also, any DIY? Or is it pretty much just the hood switch and the alarm module?

Look your car up in a VIN decoder and check for option code 5GA - Prep. Anti-theft Alarm System. If you have this option you are pre-wired for the alarm (as I mentioned above).

If anyone figures out how to get a flashing light in there without the alarm prewire do let me know.
I don't even care if there is no alarm

This has been a questions asked many times.

It seems a programming was possible in pre 2009 models, but the module is not included by default anymore. Someone created a DIY for a simple breadboard circuit to get it to work, but I can't find it right now.

Checked the decoder and no option code 5GA.

Bummer, but maybe you can find a way to get your dome light to flash, like in dtla1's links above.

I don't think so.
If the info is correct this is only applicable to cars pre-09. Mine is a 2013.

Maybe you could look in to an aftermarket alarm.

I have a 2008 e88 135i without alarm.
I have tried coding it without success. I am in Australia though.

I found that DIY I mentioned for a workaround to get the light to blink, one of these days I'll have to get around to doing it.
