mismatched tires for track?
hello there,
I going to attend a couple of track events this spring and was wondering would it hurt to have high performance street tires up front and R-compound in the rear. i currently have a set of hankook V12 tires (225/40/18 front255/35/18 rear) but i wanted to pick up a set of wheels and tires for the rear. (Nitto NT-05 255/40/17). I don't plan on going to the drag stripe but actual tracks (autocross, buttonwillow, willowsprings). |

YES. It would hurt. Sounds like a real formula for uncontrollable understeer. What good is real sticky grip in the back when the front just slides along in a straight line. You'd actually be better of if you WERE taking that to a dragstrip.

+1 on it not being a good (or safe) idea. You'd find the car to be more difficult to predict/control. At Barber motorsports a couple weeks ago a Viper got a cut in one of his front R-Comps. Just swapped on his two front Michelin PS2s and left the Hoosiers in the rear. Next session they towed him in after wrecking on the first lap. $10k + in damage and almost took out another driver.
