You can get the official retro fit BMW one for the one series. It's available for the hatch, not too sure about the coupe. It apparently mounts on the dash.
I've got a Tom Tom 340 XL, but this one has a sucker steal me mount. I just take the device and store it in my bag when I'm not using it. You can take off the device without having to de-suction the device off the windshield so you won't be left with sucker marks all over. |

it sounds like it's going to be more than $400 which is the most i'll spend to have something slightly better than googlemaps from my iPhone...
does anyone here have a Tomtom or garmin unit they would recommend? |

Just saw a brochure of it. Not sure how much it is, but it maybe overpriced cause it has BMW written on it. It looks like a TomTom unit, mounts on the dash (not like the typical suction type mount as OP was asking)...
TomTom 340XL is good. I bought mine for 348. Garmin is good too, if you travel to country. I'm just use to TomTom's interface. |

I bought a Navman from this place not long ago. Their price seems pretty good.

You can also get a holder from this place.
http://www.holdmyphone.com.au/ Haven't try it yet. Only read about it from a gadget forum. |

It's a Garmin Nuvi 360 with BMW insignia in bottom RH corner.
Mine came with it on corporate plan as a free bonus when I purchased the 135i. Inovations pack was $1500 AUD at the time which included the GPS, Ipod cable & something else. Here's the part #65900440086 for the complete system $650 USD. If you just want the mounting bracket that incorporates with the dash this is it #65900442224. I just bought a refurbished Nuvi 360 on Ebay for $145 USD - it's like new loaded with 2009 US maps to take overseas with me. |

Tom Tom One was indespensible when driving around europe, i would never travel overseas without one again, i think i'd still be on the peripherique if it wasn't for the stern american women telling me where to go from inside the Tom Tom. Just make sure you get as many maps as possible

I've got a TomTom Go730. Fantastic GPS. Very fast and doesn't take me down too many back streets.

CHOICE had a report on car GPS in May 2009. They recommended the TomTom XL ($400), Uniden Trax 436 ($399), Garmin 265WT ($549), Garmin nuvi 500 ($549), and Navman S-series S45 ($349), in decreasing order of score.

Personally, I like the Garmin Nuvi 255W. It's basic, doesn't have any bluetooth or anything but given the 1'er has bluetooth phone connectivity anyway, who cares. It's sub $300 and I reckon that's the way to go. We have three in the family now.

Must have function(s): Lane designation. Talk to text (street names). Easy for you to enter the street name. Traffic info (may be if it does not cost much for subscription and you have long journey home - me no use as I live 3km away from work). I think the Garmin 1390 is around $400. My free BMW one is a Nuvi 360 and it is shit. I would not paid $1000 for it. No way. Lucky it is free for me (coperate package at the time). Can't change as Garmin has also changed its mount, but I have seen a fellow forum member convert his mount to suit his new Garmin. However, I cbf taking my off the dash Pure function wise I think portable GPS is better than BMW system, but the split screen in the 09 iDrive is friking nice!!!

ultra high tech. Double sided tape and velcro! Hasnt moved in 14 months! Advantage is 7 inch screen. I have the same unit in my Liberty, but it also has a wireless reversing camera and was still under $300.
