135is doesn't exist?
At least in bmw's system or its the dealer in Illinois. But when entering the vin number into the system the car keeps coming up as an 135i.
Even real OEM doesn't show an IS and at the parts counter the IS vin shows up as an 135i, is this a dealer thing or just BMW hasn't updated their system..... Scratching head ... We tried another IS in the showroom as the parts manager was wondering why and the car showed up as a 135i...funny as the 335IS doesn't show either. the Z4 had a designation between the I and SI per vin yet the 1 and 3 does not. Any ideas guys? Pretty interesting .... If theirs no vin designating between an I and SI that's pretty lazy on bmw's part. again sorry guys if this is a stupid question just new to the 1 series as I had moved from the Z4 and learning a whole new beast. Have no idea, that's why I'm looking into it as when I bought my car I bought it second hand, it was only a few months old and the dealer told me it was an IS model as I bought it sight unseen. It was the service directors car. the salesman at the dealer said he had a kid and traded up to a bigger car. and I picked it up for a steal. It has all the markings and badges and extra radiators and all that jazz but the vin shows it as a 135i. Is it a clone? When I bought mine it had all the markings and performance parts that the IS is supposed to come with so i never questioned it, posted the car on the IS forum and they say things look fishy so now I'm trying to see if the dealer lied to me, in the end I really don't care as the car was priced right and the parts are all their so it just the principle at this point.
But the big question is if the "IS" has no way to distinguish it from an "I" via vehicle identification number then any 135i with all the additional performance pieces and badges from the SI could be passed off as one to later buyers, the 135is could swell in numbers when they start getting into the used market, the newer models anyway as all I have now is the production date. Their were rumors of the cars all being built as "I" then the parts were fitted later and the car was rebadged and after seeing some cars with their dash badges being mounted in different spots that could be true. Well see as I'm still looking into it. |

The distinguishing code to look for in the 135i VIN is P7MFA EDITION SPORT Sports Edition.
However the 135is is a USA car only identified by the port installed PPK2 and Performance exaust along with the P7MFA EDITION SPORT Sports Edition code |

Ok if it's port installed that may be a reason for some build variances in the badges that some have shown as perhaps quality controll are not as tight as the factory . |

I don't think anything distinguishes it in the VIN. I've been saying all along - it is barely a distinct car, more like a 135i with an option package, just like the ZHP was. There was nothing in the VIN to delineate ZHP, either.

I'm not so sure about that. When I insured mine and gave them the VIN, my insurance came back and identified it as a 135is. There may be some identifier when you run the VIN for option codes?

Short answer is no the vin dosent directly identify it as an IS. They all leave Germany as "i"

I'm sorry, I was a little cryptic. I should have said if you run the VIN and list the cars option codes if you see "P7MFA EDITION SPORT Sports Edition" as an option on a late 2012 or current 2013 car you probably have a 90% chance it's an 135is. Not all 135i cars list the "P7MFA EDITION SPORT Sports Edition" option.

135is owners shelled out a few more bucks for a bit more (factory installed) power and defined set of (minor) cosmetic changes, and BMW thought it suitable to badge this as a model with the additional "s" as they have done with similar models in the past. Sir, sounds like you need to get over it.

Tongue was in cheek, sir. I'm very well aware of the ZHP non-specialness dynamic.
