Tires on 1M

Does anyone know what type of tires come standard on the M1. Are they run-flats or high performance summer tires? And if they are summer tires does it come with a fix-a-flat kit.

No spare, there is a battery, compressor, toolkit and slime under the trunk rear floor.

There has been a few M3 guys that have done the spare tire kit after the fact, that didn't want to deal with the Mobility kit.

I know, which doesn't make sense why they offer a spare tire kit as an option on those SAV. Notice how I said SAV's this time? lol I don't really consider them performance cars even though they have crazy power/performance capabilities.

Sorry if this is a stupid question - so what are you supposed to do if you get a flat or a blow out? Just call roadside assistance and wait and hope you aren't 100 miles away from the nearest depot? I didn't expect a full-size spare (I saw the 135i didn't have one) but **** happens.

^ive gone 3 years on regular tires and never had a flat, a few bubbles, but never an immediate flat. I also cracked a wheel but the tire survived unscathed.

The 4 months that I was rfts however...

If you can't fix it with the mobility kit (compressor & slime), that's what you have to do.

FWIW, my Z3 M Coupe only came with the mobility kit and I've never been stranded for a tire-related problem in 140,000 miles of driving.

Happy for you, but this is a valid concern. I have had three flats in one year. Luckily, my e46 has a full size spare. One flat was at work as I was going to son's school performance. Changed tire got there a few minutes late, but got there. Another one was leaving on trip. Got flat, put spare on, finished trip then dealt with replacing spare a week later when got back. Lack of spare is a real issue for real people that really drive. It pisses me off to no end when I see these awesome reviews and commercials of the 1Ms in remote parts of Wales or in the desert all hiding a little secret that if you get a flat, YOU ARE SCREWED! BMW blew it on this and it the reason I have held out on buying a new one for so long. I really want a 1M so bad that I am overlooking this risk BUT no one should make it seem like it's not a big deal. Some people live in remote areas, mountain areas or travel like the desert between San Diego and Phoenix.

I have 60K miles on my car and take a 500 mile trip through remote mountains once or twice a month.

I don't know what you drive through but it can't be any worse than what I drive through.

If you have issues put runflats on the car. Or do what the rest of us do which is a can of fixaflat and a small compressor.

You shouldn't be afraid to drive your own car. That's my opinion tho.

So let's play "what if" - what it I were trying to catch a flight and an unnoticed bubble blew out the sidewall?

How feasible is it to obtain an aftermarket tire to serve as a spare on long/remote/critical trips? What is the smallest wheel size that someone can toss in the trunk that will fit properly over the brakes that would safely serve as a short-to-medium duty spare?

I ask only because last week I had a bubble on my GTI (225-40R18) that I noticed only by good fortune while washing the car. It very realistically could have blown on me at any time.

I check for bubbles once a week. It's something that you need to do with lowprofile tires

Duly noted - I used to fly and I was about as annoyingly thorough as it gets with pre-flights. However, in the press of the daily and weekly grind such details sometimes get overlooked on vehicles that don't fall 6000 feet to the ground if something goes wrong.

I'm still curious about whether anyone has gone out and put together an ad hoc spare package of their own. Checking for bubbles won't prevent all catastrophic failure scenarios.

There is a space saver spare available through Leatherz for the 135.

I don't believe that it could fit a 1M tho

In addition to a mobility kit I also carry a set of plugs, although performance tires should be patched and not plugged plugging is the only option if you are far from service. I've only used the plug kit once on my winters, it saved my a$$ from a long wait for a tow.

Not to be argumentative but my market data says otherwise. Very serious drivers are buying them.
