michelin pilot super sport

Hello Im new to the forum and have a VO 1M on order in central florida. I was wondering does anybody know if the 1M will be delivered to US customers with the pilot super sports or will it have the PS2's. I know michelin has made the super sport available to BMW for the M3 with competition package but I dont know if BMW has started fitting them to new M3's yet or if they will be put on the 1M. does anybody know or has anyone that has seen the car noticed if the super sports were fitted?

Look at the 4th and 5th pic on the link above. Can you tell which it is? I think it's a PS2. Doesn't the SS have very aggressive rubber and perform horribly in the rain? If so, I doubt they will put that tire on the car from the factory. I drove a 2010 GT3 last year and it had SS's that were terrible in the rain, even Porsche warned the owner of the car.

All the feed back I have read on PS2's is that the wet weather traction has been great. I have not seen anyone complain about these tires in the wet or dry. Other than one 1addict member who tracked his 120d. These Michelins are great street tires.

I know on my PS3's the wet weather traction is GREAT. Almost as good as dry weather traction. Michelin's Pilot Sport tires are very, very good tires indeed. And I expect them to be also outstanding when they are 80% worn out too. I think that is a great mark of great tires. Any tire can feel good when new, but down the road quality - is where it counts for me.

Here are some photos of the thread design. They all look very simular to my eye.

There IS a reason why BMW and Porsche choose to use Michelin's as OE tires on their highest performing car models. I really belive that these Michelin's are in a class of their own.

Btw... OP - all of the pre-production 1M's I have seen, have had PS2's tires. Hope that helps.

Wow, those Super Sports look like they'd be great in the dry.... but downright scary in the rain

No, that's the Sport Cups - a whole different (crazy) animal.

Quote:
Caution: Pilot Sport Cup tires are not recommended for high-speed driving on extremely wet roads/tracks with standing water where there is the risk of hydroplaning. This is especially true of shaved or worn tires. Drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds in these conditions.
The SS are more closely related to the PS2s, and I wouldn't expect the wet performance to be very different from the PS2s. The SS also in fact have a higher treadwear rating than the PS2s.

You are talking about the Pilot Sport Cup in the GT3 which is a semi-slick hence it has no wet weather traction but is freaking amazing in the dry!

The Pilot Super Sports are a new compound which is set to replace the PS2s. They supposed to be better in every conceivable way; grip, noise, wet performance and amazingly tread wear - I think they offer US customers a 30,000 mile warranty! I still think the PS2s look better though, love that crazy zigzag groove!

I have the PS2s on my car at the moment and have just received my order of 4 PSS tyres. I will put up my impressions on these on a thread in Australian Regional Forum. Have a read if you are interested.

The 1M comes with the PS2s, evident from the grooves on the ED Delivery thread pics. I will swap my 1M to PSS if they are half as good as they are cracked up to be.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup... very different tire than PS2 or PS3's!

Dackel, up close it's amazing how much the PSS looks like the PSC. Maybe that's the secret to the amazing dry performance - doesn't explain the wet though!

That's right! They were the cups I drove. On lap 4 it started raining and they went from incredible to big time suck. It wasn't my car so I took a cool down lap and came in, happy to drive a gt3 once.

I need to buy new tires... I've gone through 2 sets of RE-11's and I'm considering the MIchelin Pilot Super Sports. Anybody know how they stack up against the RE-11's? The PS2's are a bit too steep for my budget. I'm 100% happy with the RE-11's, I just wish they lasted longer.

The Moto GP safety car appears to have Pilot Sport Cups on rear, but regular Pilot Sport on front?

Can't believe BMW dropped the ball on this as they had to know what was coming down the line.

Trying to figure out what you feel BMW is " responsible" for here?

Tire Rack is suppose to conduct a test on the Super Sports soon. This tire is a max performance summer tire while the RE-11 is an extreme performance summer class tire so they would not normally be tested together.

There appear to be nearly no side rain channesl on that tire, and the center channels are quite narrow.
Even the SS look like they have no rain channels unlike the other 2 mentioned.
The PS2 and 3 have the side channels and nicely sized center channels.
A good rain channel should extend out towards the side from the center channels so that rain/water has a path to move out of the way.
But, for ultimate grip on dry a tire closer to a slick offers more rubber to the road.
Great for track use, but suckage for daily driving.

One of the things that surprised me about my PS3's is how good they really stick in the rain. I was also surprised to see just how wide those vertical water channels are. I haven't measured them but they are way wider than any other tire I have seen before. I'd say at least 10mm wide - maybe more.

Those categories confuse me. What rank are they supposed to be in?

Been running the PSSs for over a month now (in my other car in 275/30/19 sizing all around). Had placed the order all the way back in Dec and couldn't wait to get these pupies, almost pulled the trigger on the RE11s at one point in the meantime as TR couldn't give me a firm date till about March when they will be coming. Boy am I glad I held up, these are by far the best performance tire I have had, they absolutely rock. Nothing comes close frankly, big improvement over the PS2s and to me the best tire money can buy out there presently. I just hope BMW switches over to the PSSs from the PS2s soon enough!
