Proper Oil Temperature

What temperature should the oil temperature gauge on the dash be at?

FYI for anyone - it's engine specific.

My 2011 135i peaks around 240, maybe 245 in mid summer after a long drive. As the weather gets colder (above freezing but in the neighborhood I'd say it's more like 235. Shorter drives of course wont' get you there.

I can't say it's where it "should" be at, but I recall from older conversations here it's what I'd refer to as "normal". My 2015 X3 also with an N55 gives identical temperatures as well if that pertains.

Oh, to be able to tell (says the 128i owner*).

*: For whom it probably doesn't matter at all, not tracking the car and living in the Pacific Northwest.

As long as it is above 212f. Oil always has to go above boiling point.

Does the gauge measure oil temperature? It is not clear in the manual.
