Wrong Fluid -- What Now?

Just checked my run-in service invoice. I did PCD and got mine serviced on the way home in Amarillo, Texas on August 22. After reading this tread and looking at my invoice, I am almost certain they used the wrong differential oil. Invoice indicates:

01 General Maintenance
2687 WB
8 83-22-1-467-993 Differential
Oil: 832512

I believe (fear) I am in trouble. Anyone confirm the bad news? Thanks in advance.

I don't know. I tried searching on RealOEM to no avail. I am not sure what #883221467993 fluid this is. I suspect its just Castrol SAF-XJ with out the Friction Modifier in it. IF thats the case - I would not worry about it. I would go to your dealer and ask what fluid was used.

Try making a tight U-turn with your car fully warmed up... IF you can hear some "chatter" or wheel slippage/hop... you have the non+ fluid. IF you don't hear any noise when making a U-turn... then, I think you have the SAF-XJ+FM fluid.

Of course it would not hurt to change your diff fluid again.

Good Luck,
Dackel

PS: Check out this old thread... LOOK at post #12. Your car has Castrol SAF-XJ (w/o the Friction Mod) in it.

1200 Mile...huh?

Can anyone tell me if I am missing something here? I went to get my 1200 mi run-in and specifically pre-called about the tranny change etc. Looks like they did that. Also looks like they did the oil change.

But where is my rear diff change? Can anyone decipher this? No techs around - late evening pickup.

Of course, I noticed after I got home. WTF BMW

Looks like your dealer did not change your diff fluid. Better go back, just to be safe!

They are treating your 1M as a 128ci?

Calling them this morning. They listed it as a 128ci because of inventory or some such thing. The VIN is correct.

Should I be concerned about this and take it back for the correct fluid?? I too was given the 993 fluid without FM.

Due to discrepancies between what my computer and BMWNA SB's said about transmission fluid changes, my dealership at least did that for me for free!

Anyways, I'm somewhat concerned with them putting the non FM fluid in during the run in service.

It does specify which oil, just not when. The timing still seems inconclusive to me, as it points to SIB000110 for new car maintenance timing of the E82 M1

Does anyone have a print or text of SIB000110

So the SA got back in touch with me and says he verified with the tech that the tech swapped the rear diff fluid. However, not to be paranoid, but it's not listed anywhere on my invoice other than a 1200 mile check cover statement. Thinking I should ask dealer for printed sheet verifying fluids etc.

1addicts member DriveHard reported that BMW NA was using the FM to prevent customer complaints for diff noises. The rest of the world (dealers) do not use the FM. The diff will make some chatter when you pull a U-turn or tight turn w/o FM in it. It is not anything bad - all LSD's make this noise. DriveHard also said that BMW says once you start using FM you must always use it!

It has also been reported that IF you take your car back to a dealer and complain about this diff noise... the dealer will change the diff fluid for free.

see post #296

IF it were my car... I would not worry about this noise. It just comes with knowing your diff is working.

I kind of wonder what effect the FM has on the operation of the LSD. ie" does it still "lock up" the same or does it allow more slip before it "locks". Maybe we need some guys to raise both wheels and spin the tires (by hand) and see if the other wheel turns the same speed. ? I think you would need more speed though to find out how the diff really works.

no, i didnt pay anything. (edit: over $600 for a new rim that was scraped in italy! nice)

My guess its charges VPC makes to BMW for reimbursement.

I drove all the way home from S.Carolina to MA with no diff oil change! 2800miles now

Any comments as to the (possible) damage this has caused??
