128i with sports package. needing replace runflats
Well just got back from the dealership today and they told me my rears are at the wear bar I will need to consider replacing them soon. Also I have a nail in my front right but its holding pressure still, i'm going to plug the front for now seeing as its still holding air, the inner tire should be just fine.
But this all seems like a good reason to ditch the runflats once and for all! I have looked through a few pages of posts but haven't really found what I'm looking for. I want to just replace the runflats with standard tires on my existing rims. What should I be looking for on TireRack? Sorry if this has been answered before, I wasn't able to find too many posts on this subject. |

I am getting a 128i with sport pack soon and I have been thinking about this as well. If I keep the stock rims, I'll probably get 225/45R17's all around from Tirerack's ultra-high performance all-season category. The Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position look good. I probably won't go for summer tires so I get longer tire life out of them. I also don't want to worry about summer tires turning into hard plastic if temperature happens drop below 40 deg before winter tires go on the car in december. Just my 2c.

The stock sizes are 205/50 r17 (7" wide wheel) in the front and 225/45 r17 (7.5" wide wheel) in the rear. So you certainly could look for that combination. The staggered setup can be a bit annoying at times.
You could also try to put 225/45's all around, but make sure the tire you get will fit on a 7" wide rim (front), most will list 7"-8.5" rims as acceptable. 215/45 r17 would also be an option, but the tire diameter will be a bit smaller than stock and the speedometer will be off by 1.4% Several good and relatively cheap non-run flat tires are: Yokohama S-drive General Exclaim UHP Sumimotos already mentioned Hankook Ventus R-S2 if you get up to the $150-200 per tire range, there are many more good options (and probably some the I forgot in the lower range). If you want all-seasons, these are good: Yokohama Advan S4 Goodyear Eagle F1 All-season Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position

Have a look at the Toyo Proxes T1-R (sadly, TireRack doesn't retail them...but others do online, or you can find locally).

Like other BMW's I've owned, the rears on my S/P equipped 128i are wearing about twice as fast as the fronts. If this is your situation, I'd replace just the rears with Goodyear NCT5 rfts (OEM on mine) and then think about 4 new tires when all 4 are needed.
One problem with the staggered wheel/tire setup is that you can't rotate the tires - I managed almost 30,000 out of the RE 050A rfts on my Z4 that way. Tom |

Eagerly awaiting your results!
Isn't the 128i great? I honestly enjoy having to work through the gears, reminds me of my '91 318iS, but soooo much better. I was reading your post with great interest. I am looking at replacing my RFT's with, curiously enough, the same tires. My only decision is do I want to upgrade to the 135's 264 wheels. In any case, I would love some input from you as to how your 128i handles and how the ride is with the non RFT's. I have read that switching them out is no big deal, but have also read that you notice how soft the suspension is. Can't wait to hear, thanks!

I am looking for new tires for the stock 128i Sports Package wheels.
I am learning a little about how to tell tire sizes and all but I noticed some people say that 225/45/17's can fit all around as long as they are designed to fit on a 7-8" wheel. Are there any issues with this at all, as in the front tires not sitting properly and what not? (Hate asking things like this :P) but I would much rather learn this way instead of learning the other way. Thanks! |
