1st Time on Dyno - Numbers/Graphs enclosed....

So I decided it was finally time to get my first dyno with the 135i...

Background info-

Car: 2008 BMW 135i - 12,600 Miles - Auto, Sport, Premium, Cold Weather, Navi
(Car is on its 2nd HPFP, 2nd set of injectors, and 2nd set of spark plugs which was done 700 miles ago [no problems since]. Car is a July 2008 build.

Mods: Only mods are JB3 v1.4, BMS DCI, and Magnaflow Axleback Exhaust, running 93 octane. All else is 100% stock.

Dyno Equipment: Mustang Dyno - MD250 (These are supposedly known as 'heartbreakers' compared to other Dynojet dynos as they typically have lower readings)

Conditions: It was a cold day here in NY. I'd assume the temperature inside the shop was probably 55-60, while it was about 40 degrees outside, which was nice.

All the runs were done in 4th gear. Because of the colder temps, heatsoak didn't seem to be a real issue between runs.

The three runs shown below are as follows: Run # 1 (RED) - MAP 7 ; Run # 2 (GREEN) - MAP 5 ; Run # 3 (BLUE) MAP 0


There are two files attached. One has all three runs on one graph, just showing hp/trq curves. The other one has only Runs # 1 & 2 (Map 7 and 5, respectively) and also shows Air/Fuel Ratios which were as high as 14.8 from 2000-3500 rpms.



Summarized Results:
Run # 1 on Map 7 - 376 hp / 380 ft/lbs trq
Run # 2 on Map 5 - 363 hp / 404 ft/lbs trq
Run # 3 on Map 0 - 296 hp / 321 ft/lbs trq

With my mods, Map 5 made more peak trq but less peak HP than map 7. Also notice that in the upper RPM range, map 7 (run 1) holds more power than map 5.

I brought the car to Maximum PSI in Linden, NJ to use their Mustang Dyno. For those in the NY/NJ area, check this shop out if you're in the area. They are experienced BMW people (go to MaximumPSI.com) and have lots of experience with turbo kits on E36 and E46 M3's. They have a 900+ whp E36 M3 that ran in the 9's! Mike at Maximum PSI (one of the two owners) was extremely professional and took care of everything after showing me around.
They do all kinds of installs including exhausts, downpipes, piggybacks, and more for all different BMWs including 1 and 3 series. Today was a mini-dyno day and they charged extremely reasonable prices for the runs. I ended up doing 4 runs, but data from only 3 were saved and shown below.


Ok, so, questions... comments... concerns... feedback... This was my first dyno. Considering the mods, nice and cold weather, and 'heartbreaker' Mustang dyno, I think the car ran pretty well, especially on the 'Stock' Map 0.

Nice to see some different numers from different maps. Does map 0 mean a stock run, showing just your intake and exhaust upgrades?

I have no engine mods yet, just a suspension so far taking it slow on the rest.

Good numbers, but they must of had the load on the dyno lower than it should of been. Mustang Dynos are the low number dynos but then again who knows, anything is possible. Looks great!

Map 0 is the stock map plus intake and exhaust.

Load was set correctly. What do you think it "should" have been set at? It was set to the load for a 2007 335i which is heavier than the 135i.

Very interesting that Map 5 is much more streetable than Map 7 on your car. you'd have to keep in the upper rev band to capitalize on Map 7.

Also very interesting regarding the numbers at Map 0. Even with your other mods, those are very hefty numbers for a Mustang for base RWHP.

Great job, and great runs. Interesting torque variance between runs.
I met Mike from MaximumPSI at Englishtown about a month ago when he ran his silver turbo E36 M3 to the record. Super nice guy unlike so many of the tuners out there. Good dude, and totally deserved the record. Oh and it's his daily driver!!

Ok, to clear things up a little bit... this makes more sense now...Load on the car was indeed set correctly BUT....

Just heard back from Mike and MaximumPSI. Apparently the Room Temperate was set higher than it actually was inside, which would explain the high numbers in general on the Mustang dyno, and the high numbers on stock map 0 from the overcorrection. Going to go back sometime in the next few days and re-run the car. I expect the numbers to be down 15-20 for hp and trq under all maps... Will post those dynos.

As long as the correction factor was the same for all runs its all relative. Just try to do 2-3 runs on each map as there is some adaption involved to the varying load of the dyno.

The dyno settings for all 3 runs were identical, so the jb3 gains on maps 5 and 7 over map 0 are legit, but peak hp and trq for each run will be lower when I re-run it properly. Will keep you guys posted. Thanks for feedback!

This is exactly why dyno's are meaningless for comparos between cars...so many setting affect the "hp" and "torque"...dynos are only good for seeing differences with upgrades (if that). Time slips are what counts...

Those numbers are about 50 whp off. And I believe you are knocking pretty bad up top. Most Md dynos including mine are in the 240-250 range stock.

That sudden torque drop in the upper rpms does look questionable, normally with these car it gradually tapers down smoothly.

With load dynos and insufficient cooling fans IAT's can go up quickly, triggering the JB3 to drop boost. If it were KR, you'd see a "saw tooth" pattern. This just looks like boost dropping at higher RPM under extended load like it should.

+1 on the numbers being a bit high.

The dyno I roll my car on regularly had a bone stock 135i put down 262 whp / 275 lb-ft. Mine last did 317 whp / 355 lb-ft with JB3 (Map 7), Injen Intake and a cp-e™ non-catted turboback exhaust.

Sorry Mike, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The power goes back up near the rev limit....so according to you the iats dropped and the jb3 added boost back? Not likely

I'm talking about the green run on map 5. On the red run, you can see its running a higher IAT as boost/torque is lower than the previous green, even though he went up to map 7. The dip in the red run could be timing pull, but could also be throttle closure from lack of map adaption. I would need to see the boost curve.

i have to say the numbers do look, especially on a Mustang dyno. FWIW, when I dynoed mine fully stock (on a Dynojet), it yielded 280whp/283wtq. Going for another pull next month, will do Map 5 (all else stock), then Map 5 with exhaust (catless midpipe and axel back). Will be able to gauge the incremental increase due to JB3 and then the added hardware.

So more or less how much does a stock 135i with the jb3 and intake dyno on a good dyno?
