N55 JB+ Track Testing

Thought I would share some JB+ (N55) track testing from last night. This is from BMS's test car. Impressive results for such a simple and cost effective chip.

Quote:
Had a lot of fun at the track last night testing out the N55 and was able to put down some pretty respectable numbers with the JB+ considering the conditions. It's amazing how well the N55 responds to this simple tune!

The car is our 2011 135i DCT. Only mod is the N55 JB+ beta. I ran on my daily driver tires which are 245/45 Nittos. The car had around 1/3 tank of 91 octane to start, later 2/3 tank of ~97 octane, and I weigh 210. To offset some of the driver/fuel weight I removed the 50# passenger seat. Track conditions were very meh with a DA of 2200' most of the night. Traction was OK although I wasn't able to manage better than a 2.0 60' time with the launch control.

After a couple runs I added in some 100 octane to get up to around 97, cranked the JB+ up a bit, and saw some decent improvements. I'll explain what the adjustment dial does in a later post but it's not really a case of the higher setting always giving you more power so don't go cranking the dial up unless you're doing tuning with means to monitor your performance.

Anyway timeslips are attached. One thing I learned at the track is that the DCT is not a durable transmission. Once my MPH went up to around 110 there was noticeable transmission/clutch slippage going down the track. The launch control is also poorly done and somewhat useless if getting a good 60' is your objective. You can't even do burn outs with this transmission. All in all I give the DCT a big FAIL. If you enjoy drag racing and/or plan to make big power do yourself a favor and avoid this transmission. On the plus side with around 315rw on tap on the street the DCT makes the car feel a lot faster than it is with the multiple fast shifts.

I think with more runs a 12.6 would have been possible but the way the event was organized there was some confusion as to when the racing ended, and we all got cut off short. Oh well. Up next I'll be installing the AR downpipe and doing additional dyno and track testing.

What were the stock #'s on the nittos?
First I've heard of new trans issues.

Hmm, one simple connector and able to take advantage of higher octane. Remind me again why I should keep my JB3 Stage 1?? What have people run at the strip with just the N55 JB3?

Actually that is completely untrue about the burnouts...It is not in the manual, but I just figured out how to do this the other day by accident.

I am not even sure that it matters that you have gone 6.2 miles...but this is how I was able to do it.

1) Hold the DTC button down so the circle hazard symbol comes on
2) Sport Mode on
3) Manual mode with gear 1 selected
4) Then at a stop just take your foot off the brake and slam the accelerator pedal all the way down past the kickdown.

You will end up standing still doing a complete burnout.

Then I would assume you just have to change the DTC so that only DTC is activated and launch the car using launch control. I will have to try this out again next time I head out, but that is how it worked for me.

I will probably make a post about this if I cant find anything about two different launch controls...I think I remember there being something on the E90post about this though.

Are you on sticky drag radials or slippery runflats? Kinda makes a HUGE difference.

I was curious about how much power the DCT could hold before causing problems...I guess around 400 ft/lbs of tq is where the magic happens.... Would love to see stock times on this car to do the comparison.

Very true, and I am running on run flats with pretty much everything stock. With a tune I am sure you could get some spin on better tires.

Not according to the OP in this tuned car on this day. But Im sure others will have different results. Will be interesting to see how it holds up to severe testing.

I don't see that any where. Nitto makes regular summer tires not just D/R.

You're right. I kinda jumped the gun. Figured if hes sporting Nittos on a new car at the track I figured it would be DR's. Maybe the poster will let us know for sure.

I think they are 245/45 Nitto 555Rs. Like a drag radial but with 2.0 60' times I'm not sure they were being used to their potential.

The R stands for race and they're listed as "extreme drag radials" If heated up well on a good track they usually stick real well. Maybe a greasy track?

The 555Rs are more a softer street tire than a drag radial. BMS reports they last around 10-12k miles per set and can hook well with a steptronic with the right conditions. They also have a set of rims with Hoosier drag radials, which stick really well but are not practical on the street. Those last only 2-3k miles per set.
