New mirror pics and some observations
There has been some talk on here lately about the new 2010 mirrors and if they can be swapped with the 08-09's. I took a look at both styles of mirrors at the auto show last weekend and I hate the new ones. They just don't seem to belong on the car and look like they have been cut and pasted from some other larger car (same goes for the 3 series). Here are some pics that I took while I was there (sorry about the iphone quality) maybe it will help you guys compare the differences between the two. From what I saw it looks like they should be able to swap, everything the mirror mounts to looks to be the same. I also noticed that both the 128's there (one 09' and one 10') did not have a trunk lock. The '10 328 and the M X5 also did not have a trunk lock , so maybe this is a new way for BMW to save $ across their product line. Anyways I hope the pics might help you make a comparison.

the mirror from the inside view is massive. With thr trunk key, they removed them starting with march 09 builds. My January 09 has everything I like except the updated armrest from march.

wow, the new mirrors sure are ugly.
And I didn't know that there was previously a trunk lock cylinder on the 1 series. My april 2009 build doesn't have it. |

All I see is that it looks different, and it gives more to see.
From that standpoint, it's an upgrade. I think the downgraded base audio system and the trunk key removal are more problematic. BMW tried to keep the cost down by removing 2 important and functional items and to me that's a bad way to go. The keyhole may not be too bad, but it's a common function to nearly every car, especially one's where things don't work when the battery dies. What's next?, remove key access to the doors? Stupid. And, making the audio system cheaper is a BS thing to do. This car isn't low cost by any means in it's market segment. Hell, even Kia's come with better audio systems and include USB audio hookup where BMW charges an outrageous $400+ for it. If BMW is trying to get younger lower income drivers into their brand, then cutting back on audio is the WRONG way to go. I'd take a single temp setting HVAC to be able to get a USB hookup or better audio. Car audio is not that expensive especially when done in large scale, like in building cars. Removing features is BS, Audi does this all the time and it irks customers. Wait for the new model and then cut things out, that way people don't feel ripped off as they buy the newer model year, but get less stuff. RANT: End. |

you can retrofit a usb to the standard system for $270...cheaper than getting down in the factory

After driving an '09 at PCD on Thursday and then getting my '10 the same day, I like the new mirrors. The visibility is WAY better. There's probably at least 1/3rd more mirror to see what's behind you or on your side. Also, the look of the mirrors has bothered me 0% since picking up my car.
Also as others have said... there are far worse changes. Did you know that the Rest feature is now gone? It is. They replaced it with an All feature that syncs both the left and right climate controls to slave them off the left dial so you don't have to change both dials to even up the temperature. We also lost the 12 volt plug that was in the ashtray when they deleted the ashtray and ashtray cover. |

It's so unimportant, besides the new mirrors actually have a positive added functionality. I can't believe that people are so vehement about how the new mirrors look, after all, we drive a car that is not exactly a beauty queen in the first place. I mean, take a good look at the pot belly pig side profile. Having the "old" side mirrors didn't exactly help that did it.♠ |

Rest was a button you could push that would keep the residual heat going after you turned off the car. So you wouldn't have to leave the engine running to stay warm if you needed to sit in your car for a while. I would have loved to have that feature while waiting for my train on cold mornings.

There's a minor problem with the older and slicker mirrors. Not as well known as the HPFP but few of us had wind noise above X mph. It may be due to the fit and finish of the housing but every time I hit over 80mph it use to sound like a siren shirking next to me. Eventually it went away or I have gone deaf and become accustomed to it. This was one of the problem I never took to the dealer. All they are going to do is scratch their heads.
