If you're not quite ready to pull the trigger or can't decide on a new 6k exhaust, I highly recommend this pipe either as a interim solution or as a permanent mod. The sound is actually not as loud as I expected. Deeper sound with more gurgling when downshifting. This is the sound the car should have had from the factory!

They look nice. Please post a video.

Didn't you re-use that exhaust bracket in front of the secondary cats?

Yes, you re-use that bracket and Berk gives you a slightly longer allen bolt to use in place of the factory bolt because the diameter of the pipes are larger than the factory pipes. I'll have to work on the video!

I'm definitely going to swap midpipes but I'm wondering if it's really worth the extra $300 bucks over just putting an OEM N55 midpipe on it.

Where can you order these? Any performance gains with the factory ECU?

HP Autowerks weighed both and said there was a 7.1 lb savings vs stock.

I liked the idea of having a separate resonator for each pipe. There is a lot of discussion regarding the N55 vs other mid pipes - I think in the end as long as the secondary cats are eliminated the gains from either will be very close.

I got them from Berk Technology direct but there are several vendors on this site who carry them - I know HP Autowerks has posted a lot of info and video on the Berks.

Most everything I have read puts gains in the 10-15 hp range.

Without a tune you really won't see much power, the guys at Berk say you will make the same power but at a lower boost level. With the tune you unlock some power. However I did the tune before I did the Berk mid pipes. I highly recommend this mod to anyone that is thinking about it.

Getting my custom resonated midpipes made tomorrow!

I would get it from berk or the likes but shipping cost makes it not worth it!

I don't know but - If you make equivalent power at a lower boost level - that sounds like an increase to me? It's early but my initial feedback with the butt dyno is some more power, (I know that's subjective), a little more turbo whine and a slightly more responsive engine (less lag). All good.

There is a video on youtube already of a 1M with stock exhaust and this midpipe. Do a search on youtube for "1M midpipe" and you'll find it.

Gator-- Can you comment on this installation's effect [if any] on the 2200-2800 rpm DRONE that so many 1M's have ?? Dit you have the drone before installing the pipes, and did it change the drone any ??

Thanks,

Joe B [aka oldbmwguy]

Will my car still be California smog legal with this mod? I just installed the magnaflow cat back system and am very happy with it for the same price, approximately $600 but during the install when the car was up on the lift the mechanic was telling me the mid pipes are the ones you want to change out. What is the estimate on the install time?

I know I don't have a 1M, but I have the full catback Berk Sport exhaust on my car and I absolutely love it. Berk is a really great company and I stand behind their products 100%! Contact Bryan through the forum (user name BerkTechnology) and I'm sure he'll give you guys great prices!

And the cats in the midpipes are NOT required to stay emissions legal in any state, as long as you have the stock downpipes, at least on the 135i. Unless the engine tuning in the 1M produces a whole lot more smog, which I doubt, I don't think anyone would have an issue. Electronically, there is no issue, as the sensors are only in the downpipe cats and not on the midpipes. They're completely bolt on, so very quick to change out. Less than an hour. A friend and I did this in about 30 minutes, and that was taking our time.

Robertm, for some reason the sound on that clip isn't working for me. It's working for every other youtube video though. Maybe it's just my computer? I'm curious to hear what the midpipes sound like on the 1M..

Here's a video of my car with the pipes. Same stock downpipes as 1M, plus the Berk sport muffler instead of the quad M exhaust. Only other mods at the time were a JB+ and an intake, so I'm thinking the sound should be pretty similar:

So does it make the exhaust that much louder? What kind of warranty issues does this create. Is this a slightly less intense mod than changing the downpipes in terms of that?

Changing midpipes is like 10x easier then DP !

My car actually got quieter after swapping my stock mids without resonator with resonated midpipes. This is only during normal driving when you go WOT is slightly louder or about the same as before.

Joe,
I did have the drone between 2200-2600 and it my initial reaction is it is definitely less (this was around town driving) - I will be on the highway this weekend so I will report back

On a 1M yes the exhaust will be louder. Louder at cold startup, very similiar to stock at idle. As as the RPM's increase it really has a nice increase in volume. Not intrusive at all - in fact you will find yourself shifting at 500-1000 RPM's higher than before because it sounds so good

I am not aware of anyone denying a warranty claim for a midpipe change. The dealer would have to prove that the midpipe change was the reason for the warranty claim. It is downstream of the primary cats so you will not have any CEL light issues.

This is MUCH easier than installing DP's!

Any thoughts on resonated vs non-resonated?
