Correct. JB3 and Toyo RA-1's. Otherwise stock.

With RFT's, I have recorded my best times using DTC (one press) mode. Best 60' time was 2.098 sec. Since switching to a circuit/sprint tyre (Toyo RA-1) I have been able to do better with all traction aids switched off. Best 60' time is now 1.929.

Generally I find that an aggressive version of a normal street start works better than holding high rpm and dumping the clutch. The car just has too much torque to make the latter an effective technique with anything less than a dedicated drag radial or slick tyre.

So for me, I'll hold about 1200-1500 rpm while waiting for the lights and then rapidly feed in clutch and accelerator at the same time. It's not an instantaneous off-on action but happens in a quick but progressive manner.

That way, I can normally get off the line with a bit of tyre squeal but no excessive spinning. I think you can hear it in the video quite well.

I have a complete second set of OEM wheels, bought off another forum member. So I use RFT's for daily driving and swap to go to the track (or a planned-in-advance fang).

For the front I run RA-1's in 225/40/18. Pretty much the standard upsize for the front end. And irrelevant for drags so I don't bother changing the front wheels just for Willowbank.

On the back it was a bit harder to choose. RA-1's don't come in 255/35/18 which would be the perfect match to the fronts. Instead I use 245/40/18. This is a slightly taller tyre than the OEM 35 series. Theoretically, when run at low pressure this will give better straight line grip via a larger (longer) contact patch. Also theoretcially, the taller tyre may trade off some acceleration due to the higher final drive effect. Realistically, neither effect probably makes much difference.

I've toyed with the idea of running the spare front wheels 225/40/18's on the back for the drags thus reversing the trade off. i.e. Slightly less grip but slightly better gearing. Alas, I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks, I haven't run mine on the strip but done many track days so front end grip is important. I didn't think the RA-1's came in the larger size at the rears. My Dunlop's are shagged now, so I am looking for replacements. Thanks for the reply.

I have the timeslip here. He ran 14.42 at 96 mph which is a decent peformance for a family sedan.

For anyone interested I have 2 x 235/40/18 Dunlop DZ03G semi slicks left over from Dutton last year that could be good for drags. There isn't much rubber left but would certainly last quite a few drag meetings. Originally $600 each I'd probably let them go for $300 / pair. PM me if you are interested.
