Strange engine startup and rattling after replacing fuel injectors..

I just sent my car for regular service in December, and the dealer told me that there was a campaign for my car therefore they replaced the injectors. Since then my car is a bit strange.

First, if I leave my car in my garage for let say two days, then when I try to start the car, initially the engine rpm is just 800-900 rpm , then the rpm will straight away drop to like 500, and it sounds like it is going to stall, the the rpm will straight away jump to 2000rpm and then everything become normal. But if I drive my car everyday, the engine start up is normal.

Second, this is what I noticed yesterday. When I was driving at like 50km/h on third gear, if I floor it, the rpm will raise to around 3000 rpm and then the car is shaking / rattling for several seconds, then the engine back to normal. But the car is normal on first or second gear. I have tried to make that happen again but I couldn't.

Any idea what is going on? My car used to have the long crank issue, and since the dealer updated the software, the long crank has gone and they didn't replace my HPFP.

I will try to record a short video clip for the engine startup and post here.

It sounded like when my HPFP was dying.

Was getting long cranked and on cold start the rev would sometime drop and sound like is going to stall.

Just before it got replaced I couldn't rev my car pass 3000 RPM before it misfires (shaking and rattling sounds like a start to a misfire) and go to limp mode.

So I will have to wait for my car to die.....

So you have tried redlining it and the car is fine now?

Sometimes there is a grace period if your car is only like a month out of warranty they will still honor it.

Maybe try getting a recording and show it to AC? Not sure what else you can do beside waiting for a code or limp mode?

Otherwise I don't think AC is going to do anything?

Yeah I know they won't do anything unless the problem happens in front of them. But even if I can duplicate the problem again, they may still say the car is out of warranty and give me a big bill if they say no to the "grace period"...

I'm a dead man now....

Well if anything go through an indy shop. Get the HPFP from the states and get them to install it.

Surely the total cost shouldn't be that high.

FYI when my HPFP died I was out of warranty already, granted it was only 3 days, and they still covered.

Who's your SA? My SA tells me that usually people that get the software update will come back short after and get the HPFP replaced as more then likely it is on its way out anyway.

So you may have better luck talking to him? his name is Neil.

Neil served me for my first service and also when I brought in the car for the long cranks problem last year. But another young gentleman served me for my last service (December 2011).

May be I can talk to Neil if he still remember me...

I just called up AC and booked in for check up on 16/1... more than a week later than today, but at least I can record what is happening to the engine start and show them. They said they will take my car in on 16/1 and leave it for a day and try to start the car on 17/1, but I don't think they will trigger the problem.

And now it is just the matter of whether they will replace the HPFP and charge me or honor the grace period.....

If it's the HPFP I'm pretty sure BMW covers this even if the car is out of warranty.
It's a known fault, I'd be pushing pretty hard if they try to charge you for something BMW are aware is bound to fail.

I think you'll be ok.

I hope so but the only problem is we have only one dealer in WA, so things can be tough in here. I will post my outcome here after the check up.

You said you had the dealer do a software upgrade with an earlier problem? Your covered anyway under warranty as the original fault was logged inside the warranty period. The so called "software fix" didnt recify the problem, you should be fine.

I'm not sure BMW can help you with the puppy dog eyes under warranty.
