Life after 10K miles
My car actually has close to 11K now but I noticed around 10K my car started to perform better. The car used to have a slight hesitation when pulling thru 1st gear (MT), not a big deal, but now, it just pulls smooth, and the car pulls stronger thru the gears now. The exhaust note also has changed, it's more louder now, especially in the upper end of the rev range or when I plant my foot on the gas. I feel the engine is now fully broken in. Given my driving style, it has taken me this long. I'm sure for some, this has come alot sooner. Man, I didn't think it could get better, but it did!

I hear ya... had the same light switch moment at 10k km and again at 20k km. I didn't think it would get better, but now she pulls hard and purrs like a kitten when tooling around and hollers when I am up it for the rent

i only hit 5,000 last night and only now can i feel very subtle differences compared to new-break-in period. my gas mileage has also finally improved a bit and i now get a little over 300 miles per tank.
i know exactly what hesitation in 1st you're talking about. i felt it too but it's slowly going away or i'm just getting used to it.

how hard do you run your car? do u pull all your gears? i do feel that slight hesitation in first, but it doesnt really bother me. i use to have a 99 civic si and the engine also loosened up after about 10K miles. it was almost like it wanted to be run hard. for my civic, i ran it hard every day and pulled all my gears every chance i had. i think this "style" of driving helped loosen up the engine. so i'm just wondering if i should drive my 330i that way?

I run my car every now and then, not too much. My engine would've loosened up way before 10K if I ran it hard. Dude, drive your 330i the way you drove your civic! I'm getting on the car more now and it feels great! Report back after you've run your E90!

Yeah, BMW's are built so tight that they indeed do get faster once they break in...maybe used is the way to go??

My 330i only has 2500 miles on it, but I can already feel it changing... especially the first gear thing. Then again, I drive it like I stole it, so I may be experiencing a somewhat accelerated break-in I was blaming the first gear jerk to that Clutch Disengage Valve, but it appears that's not the problem. Believe it or not, a K&N air filter has helped too.

I redlined my car for the 1st time tonight. Used about 90% throttle to redline in 1st and 2nd gear starting from a 3000rpm roll. I am still in the break in period (530 miles on car) but I just could not resist and it is a leased car. I must say when you give this car a lot of gas it has a totally different character and the revs climb faster then what I had expected. Pretty impressed overall, just wish it was a tad louder when you get on it.

It will get louder dude!! Trust me, the car is really different now than it was the day I forive it off the lot. It felt really good that day and since then, it feels great! Plus what you did tonight only gets better with more miles on the clock!

I have 10,600 on the odometer now and recently it has felt looser.
Of course, i think I'm driving it harder now too. It use to be everyone and their grandma would beat be off the line at the light. Now, I'm leaving most people behind when I look back in the mirror people are like 1/3 of a block behind. Of course, I use the manual mode of the Step. Before people were merging and beating me to the spot and now forget it about it. Don't even try to beat me off the light and merge into my lane.
