44,000 M3s in the US and 2700 1Ms in the WORLD, inc less than 800 in the US.
Talk about resale value. These 1Ms will sell for $50K 10 years from now |

People will appreciate different cars for different reasons. Not everyone will agree on what the reasons are, that's what makes the market fluctuate.
However, you will not replicate a 1M with a 135i and the added cash you think you saved with genuine or aftermarket parts. Not to mention all the headaches along the way with trial and error. Suspension, body work, interior, no moon roof, the ease of finding great wheels "that fit". The list can go on and on. In the end, no matter what you do, the 135i is still just that, while the 1m will be what it is. |

^With the $24K mentioned earlier, I'm pretty sure you can build a car out of a 135i that outperforms the 1M in every way. Seriously.. it's $24k. That's a lot of upgrade money. Will it be the same? No. But then again, other than the nice exterior the 1M recycles many (not all) of the same M3 parts that you can buy for the 135i anyway. You can get something very close in feel, and superior in performance, for less. If you buy a used 135i and use the leftover money for upgrades.
M3 front control arms/wishbone will give you M-like steering feel and response M3 rear suspension bits (subframe bushings, wishbone etc) will keep the car more planted, like an M car versus the fishtail happy 135i (though the 1M isn't much better with the fishtailing as the crash horror stories seem to point out) M3 sways will keep the car flat in corners Aggressive coilovers (more aggressive than M) will keep the car stiffer, lower, and flatter OS Giken or similar LSD will improve power delivery to the wheels BMW PPK will give you the engine software and the extra cooling Wider wheels and real tires (as big as you can fit under the wheel wells) will help traction and handling. Everybody underestimates what a difference real performance tires can make. All this can be had for less than the price difference mentioned before. Not less than the MSRP price difference would be (hypothetically), but since all 1Ms are spoken for, that doesn't really matter, since nobody will be paying MSRP for one anyway. Will it be a perfect 1M? Of course not. But M engineers aren't golden wizards from mount olympus sent to build the perfect car. They are regular guys tasked with building a $50,000 M car out of existing 135i architecture, and all the limits of that price cap are still there. The good thing that can be said is that all the upgrades were designed by the same team, together, for one single application. You usually wouldn't get that kind of symbiosis with a bunch of aftermarket parts from different manufacturers. Can you get close performance for (relatively) cheap? Yeah. Can you surpass the 1Ms performance for a bit more? Yeah, but it's a long process. I'd rather take a 1M, but I'd take what I can get. Still doesn't have that pretty "M" badge, or the inflated ego that goes with it. Now let's stop bickering, we are all 1er family

1M is bought for its performance/usage value, not for its resale value.
Automobile is not a collector's market. For example, many old Lamborghinis/Ferraris (10+ yrs old) etc. which are more scarce than 1M, their owners are unable to sell them second hand if the price is not low enough. Also look at Z3M/Z4M/Z8, plenty of them on Ebay now, some even does not have buyer that wants to bid on. A car may be (has the potential of) collectable if and only if: 1. the brand/company go bankruptcy/not exist immediately after that model; 2. the company does not produce new models that are superior than the old one anymore. Do you think BMW will be a company that fall into these two categories? 10 yrs later, if someone offers to sell me a second hand 1M (in nice condition) for like $8k (16% of original price), I will say no and thank you. I would rather put $8k as part of the down payment for a 2023 M2/M3/M5. |
