I'd advise that you crack open your owners manual and find all this stuff out yourself, or just use

OP - since you live in NA what ever oil you use it should have a: "BMW Long Life-1 (LL1) rating" on the back of the bottle. There are not many oils that have this rating! Make sure it says: LL-1.
I believe your owners manual will say to use these viscosities: 0W30, 0W40, 5W30, 5W40 Here is a very good writeup on how to change your oil youself, if you are so inclinded. But most dealers charge around $120 or less. Still I prefer to change my oil myself. Even though this DIY is for a 128i, it is all basically the same. You can read thru it where I posted my DIY oil change for my 135i and the tools I used. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=301440 And here is a good thread on which oil to use... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...+long+life+oil Dackel You should also change the filter when changing the oil. |

Yea... BMW's OCI are too long for me too. I first changed my oil at; 2,400 kms, then 5K kms, then 10K, then every 6K to 8K kms after that. I know that is probably over kill, but I sleep better at night! I think since our cars are DI and have long OCI's I would rather pay a little bit more (now) for more frequent oil changes than to have a lot of carbon buildup later on. Dackel |

In the "old days" gee I am sounding old!(I'm only in my early 40's!) ...car people would change the oil after 30 minutes of an engine rebuild. Then maybe at 500 miles a few times, then every few thousand miles there after. I think even with todays micro tolerences... some metal is bound to end up inside of a new motor. This is really why you want to change the oil. Maybe it makes no real difference. But I ask you this... why does BMW have this double standard when it comes to regular BMW models and //M models? Why does BMW say that a //M model must have its oil and filter and diff oil and manual trans oil - all changed at 1,200 miles... when say a 135i can go (up too) 18K miles before just the engine oil gets changed? Makes no sense to me. I don't buy into BMW long OCI (oil change intervals). Btw... and BMW says on these //M models to change all teh fluids every third oil change too! So... what do you think about Lifetime fluids now? I am not buying into their hype. Quote:
As for tires... I decided to ditch the runflats in favor of Michelin PS3's. I am VERY HAPPY with them! You can read more of what I think of my PS3's here... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...chelin+PS3%27s Dackel |

This should insure that you get the correct oil and may even help build a relationship with your dealer's service department. Over the years, I've found this to be very useful. Tom |

I'm with Tom on this one. Building a relationship is VERY important. Just yesterday I needed a part at my dealership... the parts dept had already closed down an hour and half before I got there. Only the service dept was open for customer car's to be picked up. The guy I know there was nice enough to open the parts dept back up for me and get me the part I needed! Thats is very nice 'service". Dackel |

Wow you waited 12,000 km's to change your oil? I did mine at ~2,000.
Any LL-04 approved oil is fine. Most common are Castrol 0W30, Mobil 1 0W40, or the OEM 5W30. |

WRONG! Brandon - you are in the US right? Then you need to use LL-1 oil. NOT LL-4 ( bc that is for Germany/European low sulfur fuels) LL-1 = North America LL-4 = Germany/Europe. Dackel |

Yea... but I too changed my oil at: 1,200 miles, 2,500 miles, 5,000 miles and then every 6K miles. Call me nuts.. but I sleep better at night. When I change my oil and see how water'd down it is by fuel... how thin it looks and how black it is just with those few thousand miles... I could NEVER leave it for as long as BMW say too. Maybe this is why my engine has always felt really strong. I don't know. Perhaps its just a "lucky" motor. But I do sleep better with very frequent OCI's every 6K miles. :: Dackel |

I used the Mobil 1 because it was on the shelf at Wal-Mart and I had a gift card to burn through. LL-01 oils can be a little tricky to find on the shelf at times. |

I was talking about GASOLINE engines not Diesels. LL-1 = USA/Canada high sulfur fuels LL-4 = Germany/Europe low sulfur fuels The ONLY Mobil-1 oil that is rated LL-1 is this one Mobil-1 0w40 European Blend LL-1... Personally I prefer the German Castrol (G.C) over the Mobil-1 oil. I have noticed(as others here have too!) lower oil temps and a quieter engine, esp on cold starts it has less of a metalic clicking. This is what I use: Castrol RS Edge LL-4 0w40 (bc I live in Germany with low sulfur fuels!) I think there IS a reason why BMW says to use Castrol oils. I haven't noticed any mal-performance with the Mobil 1, but I'll probably try the German Castrol just for fun next time if I still have the car. (To be clear, I mean't Mobil 1 as in "Mobil 1 0W40 LL-01", not just any version of Mobil 1. They had it on the shelf at Wal-Mart so that's what I went with.) I change my oil every 5k miles. I'd run out if I waited till 15k (literally). Think about it. BMW used to say 3-5k and now when it's on their dime they say 15k.
Doing this takes these cars out of the "used car pool" later so they can sell new more easily. BMW says 100k on transmission fluid! That's freaking crazy. Think about it, if you're leasing then just go with it and hand the thing back, but if you own it you'll be way better off keeping your changes more frequently. Trusting a dealer, manufacturer, etc. is like trusting the government. Feels good...but winds up screwing you some how. |

^^Yea... BUT.... most Germans drive less than 12K kms per year. IF you do find a German who drives a lot... its like 20K kms - and those guys will almost always be driving a diesel bc fuel costs $9 per gallon over here. MOST Germans will only keep a new car for a few years(I'd say two years). Most lease their cars (not buy, most have their company lease teh car for them!), and after two years they get another one... bc paying for the BIG two year service, or paying for brakes or tires... they would rather just buy a new car. Then these cars get sold outside of Germany - never to be seen again. True. AND... most Germans only change their oil once per year. I think that is totally NUTS(!) - but most Germans do that. And for the really old cars you see still be drivien over here... they are ticking like a mo-fo bc of long OCI's. At least that is what I have noticed. Oil is cheap... engines are not. |

Sorry if this is dumb, but someone explain to me why one person with a 1er would use a 5w40 oil and another a 0w40 oil, etc. with the same car and same driving??? Whats best for our engine? I do know the 0-5-10 is for the weight of the oil which I guess stands for its thickness?
