British band Sniff 'N The Tears formed by Paul Roberts were one hit wonders with this toon in 1978 and 1992 after it was used in a TV commercial. I think the song is about one of my favourite things in life: every relationships is made up of one person who cares more than the other one.

Sniff 'N The Tears _Driver's Seat_ (1979)

Doing alright
A little driving on a Saturday night
And come what may
Gonna dance the day away

Jenny was sweet
She always smiles for the people she meets
I'm trouble, let's drive
She had another way to make you alive

News is blue (the news is blue)
Has its own way to get to you
What can I do? (what can I do?)
When I remember my time with you

Pick up your feet
Got to move to the trick of the beat
There is no lead
Just take your place in the driver's seat

Jenny was sweet
There is no lead
Pick up your feet
Pick up, pick up
Pick up your feet
Gonna dance the day away

Driver's seat ...

The Ravages Of Time
1979

Now

Verdict: Fair given the cards he was dealt.

And you thought they were one hit wonders with "What I Like About You"! The hair. The makeup. The clothes. The Romantics!

The Romantics _Talking In Your Sleep_ (1983)

When you close your eyes
And go to sleep
And it's down to the sound
Of a heartbeat
I can hear the things
That you're dreamin' about
When you open up your heart
And the truth comes out

You tell me that you want me
You tell me that you need me
You tell me that you love me
And I know that I'm right
'Cause I hear it in the night

I hear the secrets that you keep
When you're talking in your sleep

When I hold you in my arms at night
Don't you know you're sleeping in the spotlight
And all your dreams that you keep inside
You're telling me the secrets
That you just can't hide

When you close your eyes
And you fall asleep
Everything about you is a mystery
You tell me that you want me
You tell me that you need me
You tell me that you love me
And I know that I'm right
'Cause I hear it in the night

The Ravages Of Time

Surely it's not a swap as time goes by so much as an expansion? I don't think you have to abandon music you like in years gone by in order to like new music. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant!

Grace Jones co-wrote with Barry Reynolds building on an Argentine tango toon. The song is about the darker side of parisian nightlife and Grace should know.

Grace Jones _I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)_ (1980)

Strange .. I've seen that face before
Seen him hanging 'round my door
Like a hawk stealing for the prey
Like the night waiting for the day

Strange .. he shadows me back home
Footsteps echo on the stones
Rainy nights on Hausmann Boulevard
Parisian music drifting from the bars

Tu cherches quoi (What are you searching for?)
rencontrer la mort (To meet death?)
Tu te prends pour qui (Who do you think you are?)
Toi aussi tu detestes la vie (You hate life, you too ..)

Dance in bars and restaurants
Home with anyone who wants
Strange he's standing there alone
Staring eyes chill me to the bone

Dans sa chambre, Joel et sa valise
Un regard sur ses fringues
Sur les murs, des photos
Sans regret, sans mélo
La porte est claquée, Joel est barré

The Ravages Of Time

Performance artist Laurie Anderson had an unexpected hit in 1981 with this half sung, half spoken track. It's been argued the song is a cover of the aria "Ô Souverain, ô juge, ô père" (O Sovereign, O Judge, O Father) from Jules Massenet's 1885 opera Le Cid. Anderson looped a "Ha" with an Eventide Harmonizer and processed her voice through a vocoder.

It's been argued the song refers to the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. That may be but she's certainly Gary Numan in drag.

Laurie Anderson _O Superman_ (1981)

Oh Superman. Oh judge. Oh Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad

Hi. I'm not home right now. But if you want to leave a message, just start talking at the sound of the tone
Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you coming home?
Hello? Is anybody home?
Well, you don't know me, but I know you
And I've got a message to give to you -
"Here come the planes"

So you better get ready. Ready to go
You can come as you are, but pay as you go
Pay as you go

And I said: "OK. Who is this really?" And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
Here come the planes
They're American planes. Made in America
Smoking or non-smoking?

And the voice said: "Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice
And when justice is gone, there's always force
And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!

So hold me Mom
In your long arms
So hold me Mom
In your long arms
In your automatic arms
Your electronic arms
In your arms
So hold me Mom
In your long arms
Your petrochemical arms
Your military arms
In your electronic arms.

Supernaut's "I like it Both Ways". I still have that single here somewhere - that I bought in the mid 70's when I lived in Sydney. I wonder what Mum & Dad used to think when I played that turned up to 11 on the family turntable...

Sabrina's video. Oh yes. Brought about many fantasies for me in the 80's

As scary as she looks, I still like Grace Jones music.

I saw The Church do their 30 yeah anniversary gig at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Xmas eve. One of my favourite all-time bands & still going strong.

Scottish singer Aneka (Mary Sandeman) released her one and only hit in 1981. With it's 4/4 disco beat and latest high tech 1974 funk it was always going to be a classic. This song regularly tops listeners "best song ever, really and truly" list. Well maybe not.

Aneka _Japanese Boy_ (1981)

He said that he loved me, never would go
Now I find I'm sitting here on my own
Was it something I've said or done
That made him pack his bags up and run?
Could it be another he's found?
It's breaking up the happy home.

Mister can you tell me where my love has gone?
He's a Japanese boy
I woke up one morning and my love was gone
Oh my Japanese boy
Ooh I miss my Japanese boy

People ask about him every day
Don't know what to tell them
what can I say?
If only he would write me or call
A word of explanation that's all
It would stop me climbing the wall
It's breaking up the happy home

And while we're on the topic ...

Death to Disco!
Ah yes, death to disco, the cry that rang out loud and often. Especially from drummers:

How to play disco beat on drums
* In 4/4 time
* Bass drum on every beat. Rock plays kick on downbeats (one and three) but disco plays on upbeats (two and four) as well
* It's all about the hi hat. Play continuous eighths, open the hi hat on every upbeat and close it on every down beat
* Play snare on upbeats (backbeat)
* Don't touch the cymbals

From my school days, I'd say New Order deserves a rating. A pioneer of electronic music and a forerunner of the beats we hear today. Still going strong today after 30 years.

Toon released 1982 about the duality of the effects of the Falklands War on the Merseyside areas. Album cut features Chet Baker on trumpet (RIP).

Elvis Costello _Shipbuilding_ (1982) - Music Clive Langer, Lyrics Elvis Costello

Is it worth it
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday
It's just a rumour that was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we'll be shipbuilding

Well I ask you
The boy said 'Dad they're going to take me to task, but I'll be back by Christmas"
It's just a rumour that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The result of their shipbuilding

With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls

It's just a rumour that was spread around town
A telegram or a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
Once again
It's all we're skilled in
We will be shipbuilding

In 1977 when Bowie was in Berlin extricating himself from his drug habits he was working with his producer Tony Visconti, who was married to Mary Hopkins at that time (Peter Hopkins of Advan Performance's mother). When Bowie watched Visconti embracing and kissing in front of the Berlin wall from the Hansa Studio window with backing vocalist Antonia Maaß he wrote these lyrics. Amour fou? Je ne sais pas

Lavender's blue dilly dilly
Lavender's green
I would be King dilly dilly
You would be Queen ...

David Bowie _Heroes?_ (1977)

I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins
Like dolphins can swim

Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them forever and ever
Oh we can be heroes just for one day

I will be King
And you, you will be Queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be heroes just for one day
We can be us just for one day
And I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing by the wall (By the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (Over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (Nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh, we can beat them forever and ever
Then we could be heroes just for one day

We can be heroes just for one day

Blondie _Shayla_ (1979)

Shayla worked in a factory
She wasn't history she's just a number
One day she gets her final pay
And she goes far away

Green trees call to me
I am free but life is so cheap
Scenery is still outside of me
All alone, trapped by its beauty

Shayla turned to run away
To leave in peace and end her stay
Years of fear were in her way
Lost in space and down she came

Suddenly some subtle entity
Some cosmic energy brushed her like shadows
Down here we stop to wonder
Cars on the freeway
Bright lights and thunder

I challenge Aneka's Japanese Boy with this:

David Bowie - China Girl (1983)

I think we all agree that Bowie wins.

I was expecting to see classic Bowie and Blondie tracks here. So many great tracks, but "China girl" is one of the best.

Guns n Roses were huge at the time. The guitar solo is a fairly decent one.
