Going to change my oil in my 135i N55 before scheduled maint.
What oil would you all recommend?
Should I use what the 1M calls for or will the standard oil that the 135i comes with suffice? The factory spec's for a 1M are: BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines: Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420) Thanks for your help.

Mobil 0w40 and Castrol "German Formula" 0w30 are BMW Long-life rating LL-01 rated and can usually be found for sale for about $29.99 (give or take) for 5 quarts and a filter. It'll probably be cheaper than ordering the oils you listed.

Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 is NOT designed to be used in non-S motors. The N54T (the 1M engine)requires the same oil as your car does (N54's and N55's). Namely BMW LL-1 (approved) full synthetic motor oil. There are very few oils (only four on BMW NA's website) that carry that approval. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx |

I would not worry too much about oil viscosity. Worry more about IF your oil carries BMW's LL-1 rating. With modern synthetics the oil grade thickness is almost a moot point. I would only suggest you change your oil often - and not go with BMW long-ish OCI(oil change intervals). |

I like to stick with mobil 1 0w40 and between 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil change intervals. Just really depends when I can find it on sale or can get a good deal on it.
I belive Pep Boys currently has castrol on sale. The 15,000 mile factory oil change interval is just ridiculous in my opinion. Oil is cheap engine internals are not. |

Ironically, I don't recall the Bentley manual really calling for the LL-1 rating.
Just switched to Royal Purple 5w-40 from Castrol 5w-30 and it worked just fine for the track. 5w-30 and 5w-40 (higher engine temperatures) synthetics should be fine in the engine. If it doesn't have the BMW LL-1 rating, you may want to change your oil before every 15k. I seem to change my oil every 3-5k miles and have had no issues. |

5 quarts is what the car calls for? I'm gonna head to the store and buy oil and filter.

Btw... buy a BMW filter and not some Chinese knock off. The BMW filters will come with all the O-ring seals(2) and a new copper crush washer for the drain plug. You might also buy yourself a oil filter cap wrench while your at it. |

And yes, 7 quarts. Pour a little more than half of the last one in the engine. Start it up and check your levels. |

Leipzig puts a little green dot(hash mark) on the oil filter housing & cap. You can see the green mark at the 9 O'clock position. Simply align the two dots. Well... you might have to go a little past that mark... but not by much. You don't want to over torque the oil filter cap... this can lead to your oil filter housing leaking down the road. The housing is only secured to the cylinderhead via three long bolts! JimD put together a great DIY thread on chaning the oil. I also posted pics of my 135i oil change bc at that time no one had done a 135i DIY on changing ones oil. NO! I buy 10 quarts, then Ill use 7 quarts for the car. That way next time around I just need to buy one special of 5 quarts. And yes I know the car only requires 6.9 quarts.

It's been almost a year since I got my engine oil changed but my car only ran about 5000 miles. Even though the computer says oil change is every 15,000 miles or TWO years, they'd change the oil for me, since it's been one year, right? Does anyone know for sure?
