I hate to revive this old thread, but my 3rd brake light was in the same position as yours. My warranty is expired. Does anyone know how much it'll cost to replace? I read all previous pages for an estimate, but the only cost I found was "around $200" stated by some BS SA.

I am at this point and I got 2 of these 1 series cars. Today I looked at the one that has completely fallen off (128i). I cut off the tab thinking I was going to buy a replacement third brake light and the dealer qouted me $118 ( I need 2). They said on the 128 it was replaced at 06/24/2010. Does this mean for the life of the car this would be a maintenance item?
The issue is that the lens is constantly under pressure because it is pulling against the cut out for the light on the trunk and the base (this is the reason for the spring tension) I am going to try and cut-off the part of the lens (red part) that attaches to the base of the light and mount the red part independent from the base so there will be no constant force pulling against it. I'll try to take pictures as we go along, I have nothing to loose at this point.

The portion of the light marked in black are the piece of the lens that I need to cut so I can mount the lens into the trunk independent of the light base.

Mine's had a crack in it since I bought the car in October of 2010. Just the crack - nothing's ever fallen out. Strange, don't you think? Knock on wood it's not on the garage floor in the morning.

I just cut off the plastic from the lens and fitted it in the car. I just bought clear silicone adhesive and installing the light back later. It should be okay, it will be water tight and secured to the trunk of the car. No more third brake light issues for a long time
Glued the lens to the trunk with silicone adhesive, I am happy with the results. Now I just worked on the 135i it took me less than 5 minutes to trim the light and glue the lens to the trunk.

Yes I trimmed the plastic from the lens so it does not touch the assembly. Placed a bead around the lens and let it dry it is so much better.
