random long cranks, rough idles
Anybody else on here have the random long crank (not tooo long, just 1 or 2 seconds) and a random lightly rough idle? I've gotten them randomly with no check lights. At first I figured it was my hpfp telling me it was slowly beginning to fail. But the more miles I go the more random it is. I have notice however it happens when I tend to go close to a quarter tank or a bit below, so indeed I do figure it is my fuel pump.

how many miles do you've on your car? and when was the last time you performed an oil change? I notice more long cranks now as I'm close to my 15k service. The last time I've changed oil myself is at around 7kmiles.
My car still perform normally in terms of power, and I don't notice any weird behavior. I scanned my car just 2days ago, no codes. I think it's probably need some fresh oil or something |

almost definately the fuel pump, sometimes it had good days and sometimes its just random rough idle, long cranks. Its random I agree, but BMW looked at mine at replaced it after running tests.

Yes, I've contemplated that option, but since I do have a jb3 and catless downpipes I'll have to talk to my SA before I and see if theres a possiblity of avoiding taking all that out. In any case I was just curious how many get it, I know eventually I'll have to get it switched.

I'm at 5400 miles and recently noticed a rough idle after starting the car. It clears up a minute or two later. Is that what you're talking about? Damned HPFP.

I wonder whether it is an easy DIY job since the HPFP itself is not that expensive.

Yeah, mine only did it once, then check engine light came on while driving to work. Its obviously covered under warranty, just a pain to have to deal with. |

Yep, I have the exact same thing. Checked my codes and low and behold, a 2FBF was there at the 5100 mile mark. (I remember it distinctly because I was starting the car with some friends in the back and it took a long ass crank to start, quite embarrassing)

My car has been doing this for the past 6 months. Lately it has been misfiring on every cold start. Yet it hasn't thrown a code. But you can hear the miss. Its going in on the 13th to get it replaced...hopefully. I have been bitching about it for the past 5 months.

I have had this as well with no SES or CEL. Have not broken out the BT yet to check for hidden codes though. I am sitting at roughly 6500miles, May '08 build...

i just joined this club - long crank (5+ seconds), followed by rough idle...removed my pinout JB3 and am bringing it to the dealer this week.
i don't have a BT though so somewhat nervous... i have a SES light on. |

I also notice this with mine... Mostly when i start it or at a light... No engine lights thow...
IF your HPFP is on the way out, would it be producing less HP too.... I seam to have less power by a bit these days.... |

Ditto. Have long starts and it flagged a engine light one time. Went to dealer and they downloaded a fuel pump problem. they didnt do anything to the car on the spot but said if it continues to do so, come back.. I will be going back to complain since my car still has those long starts randomly.
Anyone have issues dealing with getting their fuel pump replaced by BMW? any hassles? Is it a new type of pump or same type they slap into it? Dont want a repeat offender especially if i can get an upgraded/aftermarket pump that is better than stock anyhow !! :P |
