30k Maintenance, recalls, and JB3
I'm taking my 1 in for its 30k service in a couple of days. They also say it is due for a few recalls, namely a new HFPF, new injectors and re-programming. I have a JB3 in my car (the one you have to wire up yourself). Is that going to cause a problem with any of the recall work or the "re-programming"? I'm assuming I can just disable it, but it would be a pain to actually remove it. I have only exactly a year left on my warranty anyways so I'm not too worried about them finding out about it but I don't want it to interfere with their ability to perform the recalls.

Its a huge pain and took me a couple hours the first time. I don't think I have enough daylight hours after work before my appointment on Friday. I suppose I could reschedule the appointment but whats the harm in leaving it in. Will they actually open that portion of the car up to reprogram?

I actually asked Terry the same question:

One last question I forgot to ask. When I go to the >>>> dealer >>>> for my oil change / etc and they decide to do the new DME update. Will I >>>> need to have the JB3 unplugged or will it be fine to leave it plugged in >>>> and >>>> just start the car like normal after the DME update is done? But I will also be going to a dealer that won't void my warranty for mods because I have a good relationship with the service adviser. They will just perform the oil change and do the update and nothing else. Last edited by cooler2442; 06-15-2011 at 02:55 AM.. |

I'm curious if anybody has any experience with modifications and HPFP work at the dealer. Am I wrong in thinking that they can't deny the replacement of a HPFP due to it being a recall? I've been trying to find a definitive answer for a little while now to no avail.

I decided to leave it in. I see no good reason to take it out and the risks of removing it and potentially mixing up the pins during removal or it's reinstallation afterwards, outweigh the pretty much 0 chance they will open up the computer, void my warranty, and later suffer an engine failure within the few remaining months of my warranty.
You can easily disable the JB3 so you can't tell it's there by simply driving it. Plus it's an extra big pain for me to remove since I used heat shrink tubing on the connections. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

The law also says that they need to prove whatever modifications were done cause the failure. They couldn't refuse to fix a problem with the suspension, steering etc. because the car was modded with just a tune.
